Peter Prinz specializes in developing software and in teaching Assembler, C/C++/C#, Java, Windows (MFC), and UNIX system programming. As the chief developer and cofounder of an IT company, Peter has gained extensive experience in software development for computer telephony. As a seminar leader and key course developer at a professional consulting and training company he has taught courses to thousands of software developers. Peter is the co-author with his wife Ulla of several other books on software development in C/C++. More recent projects include "A Complete Guide to Programming in C++" (Jones & Bartlett Publishers, 2002). Solid and concise!

True to its name, this book packs a lot of information in a pocket size package: a solid language description, a quick reference to the C standard library covering C99 and, last but not least, an extensive index. It is well organized and concise, it explains and gives you examples. If you are a newbie to C programming looking for a tutorial, keep your hands off. If you have grasped some basics of C programming, get it and use it!

An Excellent Quick Reference

I recently started using C again for the first time in over a decade, and I found that I needed to relearn it. I still have all the standard texts, including the K&R (Kernighan & Ritchie), the Kochan, and the Prata, but I needed a concise, quick reference to refresh my knowledge of syntax and usage.

This book fit the bill perfectly. It is to quick references what the K&R is to primers, a succinct text which clearly illuminates the subject without excess verbiage or other distractions.

This compact guide is not a beginner's tutorial, and is not intended to teach you the intricacies of programming in C. For this purpose there are 1000 page tomes that will do the job laudably. Even the K&R can be a useful primer for the highly motivated beginner.

However, as a condensed language reference this book provides a clear description of both the C language and the C standard library. The text, though short, is complete, and fully covers the syntax of the language and the usage of its elements. Additionally, there is a well laid out table of contents and a comprehensive index, which both simplify searching.

As a handy reference for both experienced and beginning C programmers this book excels, and I therefore give it my unqualified recommendation.

This might be a great buy if you know how to read schematics. There is nothing easy about following the "step-by-step" format of this book. It had some great items to make, but if you can't understand the instructions it's no help. For that reason I rate it low.

Wonderful book

I bought this book for my 14 year old son who has done origami for the past three years, he found the instructions very clear, and was delighted with both the variety of shapes that were given, and how easy it was to modify the shapes to create different designs.

Great Book - LOVE IT!

English is NOT my first language so it comes harder for me to write good letters. I needed something that would get more return on the dollar. This was the book I needed.

I actually bought this book as an upsell to Bill Glazers excellent book "Outragoeus Marketing" with no expectations either way. Drayton Bird obviously has an excellent reputation so I thought I would have a look. Thankfully, the book proved to better (in my opinion anyway) than Bill Glazer's. I'm at that point now where I have basically read and heard everything there is about copywriting, but this truly was a well written piece of work from a master of the written word. The best thing though, is the letters Drayton provides as examples. These "swipes" are worth 10 x the cost of the book alone. I would say though that to the lay marketer, don't expect anything on long copy sales letters. The sales letters in this book are more so the simple 4 pagers used to sell/prospect for people's products and services, not the long 16 pagers or magalogue style packages many are familiar with for selling information products and supplements. This is a particularly excellent resource if you own or manage a business and are looking at ways to prospect more leads and customers through direct mail. A must read for professional copywriters and business owners at any level!

First rate book on direct mail letters - especially for house lists

This book is not about writing internet letters, emails, or
space ads. It is one of the few books I've read which
is exclusively concerned with direct mail sales letters.

Bird pays special attention to subtleties of the writing
process, of getting the tone and writing voice right. He
admits to being neurotic about his own writing skills, which
is charming because he's without a doubt one of the top
direct marketing guys ever.

If you need to write letters to your existing customers this
could be the most valuable book you could get. If you need
to write online salesletters it won't provide much help
with critical issues like how to write headlines.

No book can cover it all. This is an excellent, specialized
tome on writing the kind of letters that come in an envelope,
perhaps with a brochure and order form. Bird mentions
Gary Halbert's contention that you'll get the best response
with plain-paper envelopes, but doesn't totally agree with
it. Some really good insights here for writing fund-raising
letters.
