Phillips, a Washington, D.C., therapist, explains that "The Troops" are the multiple personalitiesapproximately 80 men and womenof the pseudonymous Truddi Chase, who first consulted him in 1980. He further maintains that the patient, a successful businesswoman now in her 50s, has been "asleep" since she was raped at the age of two by her stepfather, who continued to sexually abuse her for 14 years. The cluster of personalities, speaking through a troop member dubbed the "Recorder," talk about their suffering for the primary victim who, it is also revealed, was mistreated by her mother as well. There are sensational episodes described by beings identified as social Alvira, hard Nails, alert Gatekeeper and others. I know what it feels like to not remember

As a survivor of child abuse and a carrier of DID, I've been asked "How can you handle reading this book? It's so graphic!" Truth is, I familiarized with so much of it. I know what it feels like to not remember, to want out of your skin, to switch based on situations, states of being, all of it. I know what it's like to be defiled at the age of three years old. Truddi was such a brave woman, and could only wish to have the support she had from her psychiatrist "Stanley". Beautifully written, sad and horrific and a mirror of my life with DID. thank you for this book.

Beneficial to read for anyone.

When Rabbit Howls is, to my knowledge, unique in the literature when it comes to biographies/autobiographies of a multiple system. Every other book in this genre that I have read discusses ONLY the system as perceived by, or interacting with, the outside world. This book actually talks about some of their INSIDE life, and that is invaluable to truly understanding what it is like to live a multiple existence.
In my experience, as a multiple: if you are multiple, this book will help you feel less alone.
if you know someone who is multiple (especially if you just found out) this book can help you understand them.
if you are a professional who works with multiples, this book will help remind you that every system is different.
Every person within the system is different and Integration is not the only option.
No matter who you are, it can help you see the creativity, the beauty, the difficulties, and complexity that living a plural life can be.

Amazing book for Adults only!

This book is gut wrenching. It is not easy to read based on the horrors and events that are described in this book. You find yourself crying and wanting justice at the same time; you want to pick up this child and run her away into a safe haven. This book helped me to find what I am going to school for now. I have bought 11 copies of this book, one at a time. Each time, I lend it to a friend with the promise of return, and they never give it back to me. I have re-read this book 5 times. WARNING-extremely graffic content.
