Jonathan Jacky is a research scientist at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is experienced in embedded control systems, safety-critical systems, signal processing, and scientific computing. An outsandingly clear and comprehensive text.

There are many good books on how to construct, verify, and establish actual program code using Z. I have read bits and pieces of many in an attempt to gain a general understanding of the whole development process and a breadth of approaches taken to it. I cannot say that I have come accross a book even approaching The Way of Z in both clarity and completeness. Dr. Jacky has left nothing out of this text and it reads extremely smoothly (without the sacrifice of complexity). I recommend it to any Formal Methods student, programmer and anyone interested in the formal specification, verification, and implementation process.

The thing I found most helpful about this book is that the author presents Z in comparison to things that we are already (probably) familiar with: data flow diagrams, state charts, etc. He shows the difference between Z and these things, and walks you through a comparison of one system using all 4 different methods.

Z for math virgins

For some reason, there are about a million books on the market describing the Z specification notation. It isn't that widely used or popular a notation (although it should be); it just seems to generate books.

Among all of the Z books, this one stands out as unique. Written by a professional in radiology who is not primarily a mathematician or software engineer, The Way of Z (prounounced as the British "zed", hence the title pun) describes how to write formal specifications in Z for a reader that may not know any significant amount of formal logic or advanced mathematics. This is a huge challenge, and Jacky meets it admirably. I have taught a dozen college classes using this text, usually to industry software engineers with rusty math skills. This book really does help them "get it". It is especially good at communicating why formal specifications are so important, and how to construct them in such a way that they are useful without extraordinary effort.

One outcome of this research was the publication with Mihail Bota in 2011 of a Foundational Model of Connectivity. It provides the conceptual framework for this book, which is divided into three main parts. The first consists of four chapters discussing the rationale behind the Lexicon of nervous system parts, historical trends in the evolution of neuroanatomical concepts and nomenclature, the development of hierarchical nomenclature tables, and practical notes on using the Lexicon. The second part is the Lexicon itself, with separate entries for 1,381 standard terms. Each standard term has a textual definition including the method used for identification, age, sex, and species to which it applies, and a citation to the first use of the term as so defined. Each entry also has, where appropriate, chronological lists of nonstandard terms (10,928 in all): translations, alternate spellings, earlier delineations before naming, earlier synonyms, later synonyms, and partly corresponding terms. The third part is a set of 10 hierarchical nomenclature tables of nervous system standard terms.

An encyclopedic masterpiece for the neuroanatomical nerd in you!

This is an encyclopedic masterpiece on a topic that requires an encyclopedic approach (I say that because many topics are best approached by concise synthesis but not scientific etymology). This book has already solved some problems for me. For example, I knew of no English terms for the adult derivatives of the di- and tele-encepalons. Now I know interbrain and endbrain and feel better for it. Happiness! I also enjoyed the fornix story (starting with dome or vault, passing through the lovely tortoise, with a tip of the hat to the vulgarity of fornicatum and so on). I was pleased to learn the veracity of the rumor that early on, mammillary bodies were called testiculi cerebri or cerebral testicles. Amusing.
I have not yet scratched the surface of this book's depths but it is already total nerd fun.

Something to pass the time.

I gave this book four stars because the story was engaging and I got caught up in the characters of the dogs and fox in spite of myself. There were no surprises here. I will say that Mr. Adams has a wonderful imagination and conveys what he thinks these animals might experience. The book was a slow-go in parts, and the illustrations and maps added very little to the book. The plot was bad guys vs good guys and in that way there was no suspense. I have to admit, I cried at the end, which is out of character for me. Then I did some research about the writing of the book and found that the author actually wanted to have the book end differently. So in essence he caved in to outside pressures. Regardless, I'm glad I read it, though it was nowhere near as good as Watership Down.

Plague dogs highlights scientific animal testing from the point of view of animals.

It also brings up important lessons on loyalty, determination and love. This book is a must for young readers.

About the Author
Tunch Ilkin� The popular two-time Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowl tackle today is a Steelers television and radio analyst and executive partner of Leadership League. His insights into the Steelers way of organizational leadership, motivation and success make him a highly sought speaker for events such as Forged in Steel, the annual conference held at Steelers facilities. He played offensive tackle for the Steelers for 13 years, from 1980 to 1992, and reflecting his abilities as a leader, served as vice-president of the NFL Players Association from 1989 to 1994. In 1998, he joined the Steelers broadcasting team of Myron Cope and Bill Hillgrove, and after Cope's retirement, took on the color-commentary duties. He works as an analyst on the Pittsburgh affiliate of Fox Sports Net and has written for NFLHS.com, a website for football fans. A convert from Islam to Christianity, he is the Director of Men s Ministries for South Hills Bible Chapel.

For the "Faithful" Steelers fan (pun intended)

As a daily listener to "In the Locker Room with Tunch and Wolf," I especially enjoyed the anecdotal insights by Tunch Ilkin throughout the book. But beyond that, I thought the leadership principles outlined in the book were not only true, but useful in virtually any capacity of leadership in which one might find him/herself. Even before reading this book, I felt there was a deep sense of faith-commitment in the Steelers organization. After reading it, my feelings were confirmed. While I began loving the Steelers for their hard-nosed style of play, I continue to love them for much more of what goes on behind the scenes and what they stand for apart from football. So to all "Faithful" Steelers fans, get a hold of this book and give it a read. You'll be glad you did.

Solid Principles To Lead By

The book offers commentary to how the solid leadership principles have been and continue to be a part of an organization that prides itself on humility, teamwork and consistent performance. I have been in manufacturing for many years and have witnessed leaders from both sides of the spectrum. The leaders that embrace these principles and flow them down through their organizations have that contagious humility that make them great.

Solid leadership advice.

I found this book to be a very enjoyable read with some excellent advice on how to become a better leader at home, at work and in the community. At a time when so much attention is paid to sports stars and the organizations that they represent, it's encouraging to look at the success of the Pittsburgh Steelers, both on and off the field, and learn to apply some of their leadership principles in our own lives.
