Chords and memories

When i was a kid my dad used to spare some of his time teaching me to play guitar I guess don't have interest with guitar during that time .Way back then that is the most precious time i ever had with my dad when i was a kid but now that i am adult and want to teach my son i need to know everything about guitars and chords. I really appreciate this E-book because of its complete instructions and chords for me to learn this again and pass it to my son.

Worth it

This is a handy companion book for those who may be working through music theory with a teacher or with a more comprehensive music theory book. The author approaches this from a different perspective than I have typically found. It is intuitive and complementary to other approaches. The book is short, but it is really helpful for those who are trying to get an elementary handle on chords.

Improve your visualization and your guitar skills

I'm having difficulty finding the root when playing a chord. After I read this book it's been easier for me to create a pattern with each note. The 5 patterns discussed in this book was really helpful. The photo on each tutorial is a huge bonus for me and also the instruction set is clear. I suggest this book to everyone to learn everything about the chords.

The other reviews for this are for the old edition and not the Brief Introduction to Education, so please be aware that the date of the reviews is before this text was published.

In reading the other reviews, it was obvious that the reviewers missed the point of the text--it is to be used in an introductory course, not in a course where preservice or practicing teachers would be designing lessons and units.

This text provides a great overview of the educational issues and problems that someone contemplating becoming a teacher needs to know about before investing time, energy, and money into obtaining certification. The brief version is much better, more up-to-date and student friendly than the original text by Sadker and Sadker.

For anyone contemplating being a teacher, the issues presented in this text may help you decide if you really have what it takes to be a classroom teacher. It gives an overview of the political, economic, and social issues facing educators as well as the historic perspective of American Education.

Well worth the cost.

We are being taught opinions from bigots

This textbook is filled with the authors biased opinions and lacking anything of any real educational value. I don't like being taught from biased sources, whether they be liberal or conservative. Plenty of times I had to stop reading because I became so frustrated by the authors bigotry. I hope teachers will not use this for their class. I have not learned anything of value from this book about the subject I was taking, but I did learn to be on the lookout for people like Sadker who want to convey bigotry in a college setting. I really felt like I wasted my time and money, but fortunately I was able to sell the book back for close to what I paid for it. I can't believe this passes as a college textbook.

This book was used for my freshman Foundations of Education course. I found the book a joy to read, and it provided a balanced look at the teaching profession. This one book that will definantly not be sold back. The supplemental materials on the CD-ROM seemed to be high quality, but I disliked having to read them on my computer and ended up ignoring the CD.

I had wanted to tell this story for many years. One of the key players in the story - Ilmor's Paul Morgan - was tragically killed in 2001 while piloting an historic WWII plane. I believed most of the story had died with him, but with the help and encouragement of Paul's son Patrick, I was inspired in the summer of 2013 to finally put the details together. I spent much of the second half of '13 in the US and the UK, researching the archives and interviewing nearly all of the key players.
It was a brilliant effort from so many to bring the engine to life - and I pushed everyday to write a book that honored their hard work and also be a compelling, intensive true mystery story for the reader.�I hope you enjoy it.Jade Gurss

Jade Gurss is the co-author of two New York Times Best Selling books. Driver #8 (Warner Books) chronicles Earnhardt Jr s rookie season. You will RIP through this.

I was not only a CART racing fan, huge Al Jr fan, and a motor-head, but I was also a machine designer back in the day, coming up with (CAD or hand-drawn) concepts but then reverting to dry ice, heat, weird materials, etc, to solve problems. All the technical stuff TOTALLY resonated

This book was perfect. The author was obviously passionate, and that shouldn't be taken for granted - not all works come across as a real labor of love, as this did.

If you love engineering, and/or love racing, especially open-wheel racing, this book is an absolute MUST-read.

As an engineer and motorsports fan I found this story very compelling. It's technical and dramatic. I knew of the special Mercedes/Illmor/Penske Pushrod Indy engine, but this story paints the whole picture in vivid detail.

I'm now inspired to reach higher and work harder to achieve things I previously though we're impossible.

"The Beast" Roars!

"The Beast" is a well written, suspenseful, & very interesting book. Guess reveals great insight into the "Penske Machine" and the politics of Indy. This book has me interested in Open Wheel Racing once again. However, I would not recommend this book to anyone not familiar with the basic principles of the internal combustion engine.

Best of the trilogy

Interesting series! Neither Mr. Mercedes nor Finders Keepers depended on Stephen King's talent for the supernatural...but both were terrifically suspenseful.

In "End of Watch", King amped up the suspense--palpable throughout the novel--and threw in the stuff that made him famous...eerie supernatural occurrences, made utterly believable by his masterful writing.

But, for me, the real treasures in End of Watch are King's characters. Bill, Jerome and Holly are some of the most realistic and endearing characters King has written, and during the course of the trilogy, you can feel them develop & grow. Holly, especially, is most memorable and wonderfully unique. As for Brady-- the villain we loved to hate in Mr. Mercedes? No letdown there, either!

While "Finders Keepers" wasn't my favorite King novel, I thought "End of Watch" was the perfect conclusion to the Bill Hodges Trilogy.

By the way, while the three novels are best read as a trilogy, King has included enough background in each (without being horribly repetitive) that they could, I suppose, be read as stand alone novels...but you'd be missing out.

Great Conclusion to the Trilogy

I was anxiously awaiting the conclusion to the Bill Hodges Trilogy from Stephen King after blasting through the first two books in the series. The way the second book ended I was expecting something completely different from what King delivered in this conclusion. This is definitely a departure from the rather gritty, real-world detective fiction that the previous two novels presented. Instead King re-entered some of the realms he presented in earlier works like Carrie and the Green Mile. Much more supernatural than parts one and two, but totally engrossing and exciting. The novel is long, as are most King books of late, but it's a rather quick read - hard to put down - just one more chapter. Obviously it won't make much sense if you haven't read the first two books even though King does a good job of refreshing your memory of what went on before. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

My favorite books are when he spends the time to develop ...

I have read many Stephen King books. My favorite books are when he spends the time to develop rich characters with a supernatural edge that can border on reality. I believe he committed himself to a trilogy and struggled to finish it with this book.

I was disappointed in his use of telekinesis in the book which he has used in the past. I believe it was close to "jumping the shark" with Brady's third attempt at mass killings.

In the end, I read it to comple the trilogy. However, when I tell friends that King is a great writer with Rich dialogue, charachrkter development and he goes way beyond horror, I would not recommend this trilogy or this book. He has done and can do much better.

Sixties rock kingpin Jim Morrison personified the period's allegiance to sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll. Butler reexamines his life, emphasizing his "cosmic mate" and common-law wife, Pamela Courson. More or less ignored by previous Morrison biographers, Pam and Jim's relationship was relatively private and long term for a rock couple then and maybe for any couple anymore. A few years after Morrison's 1971 death, Courson died of an apparent heroin overdose. In the finest rock tradition, the circumstances of her death were questionable and were not much investigated: "At that time, in that place, if it looked to us like someone had died of a drug overdose, frankly we thought they deserved it and didn't waste our time on it," said one police officer who asked to remain anonymous. Perhaps this well-referenced, moving book will spark yet another renewal of interest in Morrison. After all, as a 1980s Rolling Stone headline put it, "He's hot, he's sexy, he's dead." How one views this gossamer-thin account of the doomed Doors frontman and his equally troubled common-law wife rests largely on one's (forgive the expression) ``perception of the Doors.'' This book will be tonic to those eager for more dish on the man they regard as the Rimbaud-esque cynosure of the angst-filled '60s generation. Those baffled by Morrison's fame--particularly the respect he received as a poet--will find this book supports, quite unintentionally, their contentions as well. It's not that Butler didn't do her homework; among the people she interviewed and sources she consulted are the Elektra Records A&R tyro Jac Holzman and the surviving members of the Doors, school and police records, and even medical journals. The problem rests chiefly with Butler's subject. This story has in large part been told many times before, from many angles, and often to better effect. Readers, whether Doors fans or not, will have a tough time piecing events together chronologically, as this narrative only sketchily covers the background events that shaped and defined Jim and Pam's world. Additionally, Butler seems to cast a sentimental and too often uncritical eye on the ``tragic lovers' '' relationship, neglecting to acknowledge that the two were essentially beautiful booze- and drug-addled twentysomethings with money to burn, and that their fatal flaw was not so much being at odds with the material world as it was never having been forced to confront it without help from agents, roadies, groupies, or sycophants. The Doors' keyboardist and co- founder (with Jim), Ray Manzarek, claims that Pamela and Jim will ``go down in history as great lovers,'' and that their tale recalls Romeo and Juliet, Heloise and Abelard. Life Through Rose Colored Glasses!

THE GOOD: Patricia Butler obviously went to great lengths to research the book. There are many informative and worthy historical points presented about both Pamela Courson and Jim Morrison. I agree with Butler that Courson was worthy of research due to her relationship to Morrison. Despite their “unusual” relationship – even by 1960’s standards, she played a significant role in Morrison’s life.

THE BAD: Ignoring the entire heroin angle for Morrison’s death by attributing it to asthma was a stretch. There is enough first-person witness testimony from Danny Sugarman, Alain Ronay and Agnes Varga indicating it was Courson’s heroin, which Morrison used to overdose. It seems, based on these later confessions, she was distraught and depressed at being the person who was indirectly responsible for Morrison’s death. It was a heavy burden for Courson, which likely led to her downward spiral and eventual heroin overdose death as well. In a way, that version of events is also a love story – just not as tidy as Butler’s version. Butler should have presented all of the facts of Morrison and Courson’s last day in Paris rather than sticking to one path.

As a side note, the unsigned Colorado common-law marriage application Corky Courson came-up with during the estate trials certainly seemed liked a weak effort to “make” Pam and Jim married. Also, having her grave marker listing her as Pamela Morrison rather than Pamela Courson was also odd, considering there is not a single fact (or signature) truly indicating they were ever legally married. History may like to say Pam and Jim were emotionally married, but that is different than the legal kind. Nevertheless, in the end, the estate controversy was overblown, since Morrison bequeathed his estate to Courson in a legal, notarized will in 1969. Jim Morrison wanted Pamela Courson to have his estate – they didn’t have to be married.

Ironically, I live a mile from where Courson grew up on Mayfair and a mile from where she is buried at Fairhaven. Even today, 39 years later, her grave always seems to have a fresh red carnation, which indicates people still care about her legacy. History shouldn’t be too hard on Pamela Courson – she was what she was and never asked to be viewed any other way.

Examining Jim and Pamela's private life

This is not just another book about the legend of Jim Morrison. It looks at the relationship he had with the woman he considered his soul mate, which is something that has been obscured by the rest of his outrageous life. The author has obviously done her homework and presents it in a concise and well-written manner. They were a young couple in love who had some dramatic ups and downs, but nothing ever changed the connection they had with each other. I felt like I was shown a more human side of Jim Morrison and it was refreshing. My only complaint is that it seemed to end rather abruptly - but then, so did Jim's life, with Pamela right behind him. I get the feeling that when Jim died, so did Pam, and it just took a little longer for her body to catch up. If you are a fan of rock biographies in general and Jim Morrison in particular, you will enjoy this book.

Finally, the real Jim Morrison love story

I really loved this book. It felt factual and accurate to me. Patricia Butler takes her time telling you about Jim and Pam, starting in their childhoods and ending when Pam died. She can site all of her sources. She talked to ALOT of people close to the couple. She paints a very real picture, and doesn't over romanticize their very stormy relationship. At the same time, she explaims how, despite their troubles, Pam Courson is the only woman who can be considered Jim Morrison's "cosmic mate". There have been a lot of women who have claimed to have been Jim Morrison's true love. This book is the final word on that. She also talks alot about Jim's life before the doors, interviewing people who knew him best at those times. We learn things that may give some perspective on the tortured inner workings of a rock star who would have rather been a poet. We also learn about the circumstances surrounding Jim's death. For me, this book answered a lot of questions.
I only hope that where ever Jim and Pam are, they are together and at peace.

Hamilton Sheppard the Mayor of Mobile Alabama and Klan member; was Liza's father and Boss of Willie Rae senior, who was a Christian and Lisa and Willie Jr. father. He was faced with a choice that his Christianity wouldn't allow him to make; his son was rebellious and on path of destruction, Willie Rae found himself having an unspoken bond, with the Mayor's wife Patricia Ann Sheppard, who was also a Christian and a decent White woman if there ever was one in the South. The black farm workers called Patricia Mrs. Patty; it was a name giving to her by the colored workers as a term of endearment. The colored workers were called the Sheppard's-men giving to them by Hamilton Sheppard and his brother Jud as a term of ownership; even though slavery was emancipated. Patricia was nothing like her husband Hamilton, in fact she was an activist of sorts for the colored. This didn't sit too well with Hamilton. The hate he harbored for the colored and the Christian love that Patricia exerted tainted their marriage. And because she didn't share Hamilton views he was often violent towards her; he hated what she stood for so much that he wanted her dead. The day would come when blood of the innocent would be spilt on the hanging tree, that they now call the blood tree.

Michael Maccoby, President, The Maccoby Group

Michael Maccoby is a globally recognized expert on leadership who has advised, taught, and studied leaders of companies, unions, governments, healthcare organizations, and universities in 36 countries. He directed a research program at Harvard on Technology, Work, and Character from 1970-1990. He has taught at a number of universities including Oxford's Said Business School where he is an associate fellow. For his work in Sweden, he was made Commander of the Royal Order of the Polar Star in 2008. He has a BA and a PhD from Harvard in psychology and anthropology, he studied philosophy as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at New College Oxford, and is a graduate of the Mexican Institute of Psychoanalysis.

Strategic Intelligence, the newest book by leadership expert Michael Maccoby PhD, is a deceptive home run.
Its simplicity belies its depth and sophistication in the best current thinking about leadership. Focusing on leadership at executive leadership levels, the book delivers its power by cleverly combining three elements:
• A framework to organize change leadership under the rubric of Strategy
• An immensely helpful overview of key leadership tools
• Applying both personality and motivation evaluations through the above
After explaining how to apply personality and motivation evaluation tools to develop and execute strategy, the book actually offers specific ways to discover and use those tools!
Examples are mercifully brief and pointed, providing the seasoning necessary to study and apply the essential principles included here. As a bonus, leadership nuggets from other best current thinkers are provided, with ample footnotes for the research-minded.
The news here is that personal motivation and values dimensions are accessed in ways that are easy to understand and apply, but with the promise of powerful results.
Serious executives and their mentors will read this book.

A Must Read for Leading Complex Systems

Michael Maccoby has been an on-going influence in my thinking on leadership. As one of my friends said after hearing him speak, "Listening to Dr. Maccoby was like enjoying a rich meal verses what I'm used to on leadership - sugary deserts." The book Strategic Intelligence presents a comprehensive, system view of leadership. It's the most comprehensive book on leadership I know in the marketplace. It's not always easy reading, but it is always insightful reading. I do a great deal of work with businesses that are dramatically impacted by economic cycles. Strategic Intelligence has helped me tremendously in how I work with CEO's in thinking about the future of their company and decisions they need to make today as they prepare for tomorrow. I can not recommend this book more highly and although this may sound a bit sappy, I am grateful for people like Dr. Maccoby who see the purpose of business as not just returning the highest stock appreciation to shareholders as in the book Good to Great, but the dual purpose of making both a financial and social impact on the world.

Profound, practical, and helpful!

Strategic Intelligence integrates really beautifully many of the parallel, but until now unconnected, currents in leadership thinking today. In doing so, the book does leadership study an important service: it offers a superstructure, making sense of how all these ideas fit together. One of its great contributions is that it is not rooted in any one business, academic, or national culture. As a leadership instructor, I have been searching for ways to help students transcend culture-specific leadership approaches, and this book can help. The SI tool offers leadership guidance that applies to diverse settings and contexts, yet holds fast to the principled conduct of business.
