Readers familiar with the Irish singer won't be surprised that he comes off as both earnest and quick minded, but the book's long-form q&a format also reveals an acerbic sense of humor and genuine humility. Topics shift and flow in a fairly nonlinear fashion; anecdotes jump around from 1979 to 1998, from Dublin to Africa, from music to father-son relationships. Presuming that most readers are intimate with U2's history and discography, interviewer Assayas gives little background information other than the dates and location of each discussion. The lack of context or clear chronology is at times frustrating, but Assayas, a French journalist and longtime friend of the group, compensates by steering the conversations into difficult territory: politics, religion and the personal dynamics of a successful rock band. About the Author
Michka Assayas is a music journalist and novelist who lives and works in Paris. He met Bono in London in 1980, and was the first journalist to champion U2 outside Ireland and the United Kingdom. Michka and Bono have spent the last two years putting this book together at Bono's home in Dublin, and in Paris, Bologna, and on the French Riviera.

Fantastic!

Even if it was published in 2004, the information is relevant. I enjoyed the interview format and the way the author would not let Bono stray away. There's a chapter near the end where Bono predicts the future of music and I found myself laughing at how accurate his predictions were. His passion for Africa is very well explored. Some may think it took much space in the book, but hey! that's his cause. As he self-describes, he's a "Rock Star with a Cause." I admire him for taking a cause so seriously and working so hard for it. It's more than what I do, and more than what most people around me can brag about.
Whether you are a U2 fan or not, the book is worth reading.

Read it slow; it is thought provoking.

I enjoyed this book immensely but it did take me a month to read it. It was a book I needed to read, then put down, etc. rather than a quick read cover to cover, just due to the high energy the interviews had & it was thought provoking. I recommend it for any music lover!

Buy it! Its well worth the money and the honesty this man pours out in the pages is well worth the time spent reading it. I love Bono. He is a passion in my life, his music and his incredible open heart. He has taught me so much in the way of learning about others lives and helping instead of needing for myself. If everyone could just do more to help others, I think this world would be a great place for EVERYONE. And I think Bono is a real asset in making others see this. The book was pure and honest, and I liked how it opened my eyes to things I really didnt know about Bono and how he feels.

About the Author

Michael Bosworth and Ben Zoldan have been collaborators for more than a decade, training tens of thousands of salespeople. They cofounded Story Leaders, LLC, a training firm focused on improving the performance of salespeople. A good book or a great pitch?

Decent book. I've been in sales since the age of 16. At the beginning, I completely bought into the concept of relationship selling because that's what I've always done. It was great seeing/learning that being non-"salesy" is exactly what sells more than a traditional salesperson.

However, about halfway through the book, I realized the authors wrote this book to justify to their current clients that they were wrong about their previous sales training methods. This book is there way of saying, "Hey, we were wrong, but look at all this research we did. Now, we know we're right and we want you to pay for all your sales people to go through new training with us again."

All in all - a great book for those afraid of being salespeople (we are all salespeople in some way) and a great book to get your mind away from the traditional fact-regurgitation sales pitch.

Paradigm Shattering

There are people who take the thoughts of others and polish them up and sell to others and make a living at it. Then there are others who are able to see what is missing and rush to fill it and take the rest of us on their shoulders to greater heights. The authors are clearly in the second group. Mike and Ben take a subject that has been dissected, analyzed, assessed, observed, commented on, critiqued, etc. ad nauseum (by them as well as others)- and absolutely uncover truths and insights that elude most of us. Having had the experience of collecting a library of books, articles, websites, speaker notes and the like - I was confident that there was nothing "new under the sun" when it came to selling skills and training on selling. Alas, I was mistaken (though no longer!).

This book takes insights, findings, research, and skills used by other disciplines and applies it to the fields of selling and buying in an innovative way - but never talks "down" to the reader and does not aim too high so that it no longer is an easy read. Written in a very accessible and conversational way, this is one book that I have already highlighted, dog-eared, and purchased for others to read. My excitement at having Mike and Ben open my eyes so that I could see what has always been before me is immense.

I highly endorse this book and would recommend it for any and every executive, sales professional, or student looking to enter sales.

Selling is neither logical, linear, or predictable, but here is the next best thing!

When Michael Bosworth worked at Xerox, so did I. We were both trained with program called PSS, which stood for Professional Selling Skills. The course was based on study which was designed to determine why 20. percent of the sale force created 80 percent of the revenue. I believe, forty years later we are still trying to solve that problem.
During those 40 years Michael has written 3 books and taught countless course in an effort to provide a selling methodology and techniques that is in step with the way people prefer to buy. His latest "the Science of Selling Through Emotional Connection.... ," is excellent, innovative, and timely. He provides two creative pathways to understanding why we are feeling creatures before we are thinking creatures, specifically neuroscience, and storytelling and tending. The book is both insightful and practical and I sincerely hope you'll find as much value in reading book and applying the technics

"Most of us would like to be smarter," asserts Restak (The Brain, companion to PBS's series by the same name), neuropsychiatrist and clinical professor of neurology at George Washington University Medical Center. Restak claims that improving cognition is the answer. In accessible science-teacher style, Restak delineates the brain's attributes, from its weight (three pounds) to the number of nerve cells (100 billion) and its infinity of synapses, explaining what aids communication, informs memory and so forth. Knowing how the brain works is important to building its power, says Restak, and in this high-tech age, we need as much cognition as we can get. He proposes a comprehensive and handy plan to improve one's mind, literally as well as literarily. If one stops learning, one's overall mental capacity diminishes because the synaptic links shrink. Brain stimulation has been declared protection against Alzheimer's. The brain does not age; keeping it "fit" is no more difficult than keeping one's cholesterol under control. Neuropsychiatrist Restak (neurology, George Washington Univ. Medical Ctr.) has written numerous books on the human brain, including the very engaging The Brain Has a Mind of Its Own. In his latest work, he offers 28 ways to improve mental fitness, including exercises to enhance memory, concentration, creativity, and analytical ability. The proposed exercises are designed to increase neuronal linkages that will, in turn, improve overall mental functioning. Some of Restak's suggestions require a hefty time expenditure, adequate financial resources (a laptop computer), strong joints and flexibility (tai chi exercises), and a private office equipped with a couch (napping during the work day!). But his point is well taken: practicing simple mind games, listening to music, reading widely, keeping a journal, etc., can greatly enhance the brain's performance. Think and don't lose your mind

Restak provides a short manual for keeping your mind as you age. The basic premise of the book is that by keeping your mind active (which causes your brain to rewire itself continually according to PET scan research) you will keep your mental sharpness as you age. He says the brain is the only organ of the body that doesn't wear out with use.

The lessons, as another reviewer has said, are for the most part motherhood and apple pie. Basically, stay intellectually stimulated and participate in physical activities that require fine motor skills. The example given is tai chi. Other activities such as dance or Pilates would be just as good.

Good story written poorly.

The first book was great. Second one, not so much. The story line is really good. It's the way it's written that drives me crazy! The author is constantly 're capping what happened. I constantly had to skim threw paragraphs because I was reading the same thing over and over again. Also, the author spelt out everything that was happening so you knew what was going to happen before it did. I wish the author would of let the reader put the puzzle pieces together ourselves instead of dumbing it down for us. After I finished this book I decided to not even continue with the third. I want to know what happens in the story I just can't take how this book is written!

I really like the story the author is telling, but I can't help but notice so many errors in the writing. In some places it was lack of comma's, and then I started to notice spelling errors and they placed a character's name incorrectly. These errors were in places that were important to the story, so it made it a little confusing. I love this series so far and I plan on reading book 3, but I do feel that when a book is being published it should be published without errors. It is almost like they published the second phase rough draft instead of the final draft. I will continue to read works of this author, as I enjoy her writing style.

a hot and smexy unputdownable read!

I love a story that has opposites that are attracted to each other. Kane is an arrogant dude and Reese is confused, abused and misunderstood. She is the ultimate outsider but Ramona Gray still had me rooting for her from the very beginning of the story. Reese and Kane hate each other. Everyone knows it. He makes life hard for Reese and she seems like a weak individual at the beginning of the book. She is the zero that turns onto a hero though and ultimately, this was what kept me turning the pages. I had to know all of the ways that she shows them that even the weakest among us have hidden strengths. Kane was strong bodied and strong willed right from the start but he gave Reese someone to clash with and that also kept it interesting. I enjoyed the characters and how they developed and grew as the story progressed. I thought the idea of a cruel Alpha using his underlings for his own devious purposes hasn't been done this way in a while so it was fresh. I enjoyed reading about this other dimensional world, wondering if that place might really exist outside of the authors mind, and thankful that I don't live there. It was overall a very good stand alone novel as well as being a part of a continuing storyline.I would totally recommend this to anyone who likes strong females, hot sexy scenes, and big stubborn dudes who have to get over themselves. Nicely done, Ramona Gray. Nicely done.

HOT shifter love story

Adult reading. Reese investigates a glowing ball of light in her back yard when it transport her to another world. She's captured and taken to a slave house. Not believing what happened to her, she talks about the light and her world and the other girls think she's crazy. Three shifters came to pick out a female for their alpha. Each picked one because they couldn't decide which girl to take. Kane noticed that Reese smelled different and she responded to his touch. Theran picked Ghita and Hanif picked Adina. On their way home, the humans face cold weather, they got rained on, some fought the attraction others did not, there was danger, rescuing, wolves who couldn't swim, they fought a Tagen (a giant beast) and there was lots of sex. Reese gets her answer as to why the alpha doesn't have a mate. Once they reached home, Reese finds out more about Kane, his alpha and the other shifters. Fast pace, hot sex, fighting, funny, wonderful story with interesting characters. In this world there is no vampires so it ends with Kane running into vampires from the first two books. The next book will be a combination of characters from all three books which I am looking forward to.

Excellent Series..and each book in it!

The 4 books that comprise the "Other World Series" are basically fantastic. Well written books that are thoroughly entertaining... with plenty of hot, steamy scenes on all of the books. The first 2 Books of the Series need to be read one after the other, since Book 2 is the continuation of Book 1 of this series. As for Book 3 & 4, they can be read as a standalone, if you don't want to read them all - Still I would recommend you read the whole Series in order, it just gives you a better understanding and all the books are worth reading! Great job Ramona Grey... Kuddo's to you!

I just returned from my first trip to Santa Fe. I solely depended upon the Lonely Planet (Santa Fe/Taos) guide to help me navigate/acquaint myself to Santa Fe and the surrounding areas. It was a wonderful resource and would recommend it highly to anyone traveling to Santa Fe, as I could not find my thing lacking in it. Oh, do visit the Chocolate Smith in Santa Fe. As the author noted, they have wonderful organic chocolate to please any chocolatophile (is that a word?).

Far from perfect

The reviews previous to mine only seem to address Santa Fe, and perhaps that portion of the book is more accurate. But I went to Taos and was bitterly disappointed by unfortunate inaccuracies. Inspirations doesn't serve sandwiches on the weekends, a detail the book left out. "Tiwa Kitchen" is actually "Tewa Kitchen", and though it wasn't the book's fault never opened on the day I wanted to go. Zen Ranch went out of business, and I'd really been looking forward to eating there. One restaurant I went to for the much ballyhooed huevos rancheros looked at me as though I had sprouted horns - not exactly a friendly establishment. It might have been nice to know about the nightly indian dance demonstrations at Kachina Lodge, which is the only regular demonstration performed by Pueblo indians in town, or Wired? Coffee House, which is actually a lot cooler than Cafe Tazza and offers free wi-fi. Overall, it felt as though the author had really rushed through, and perhaps some of the places she raves about were only nice to her because she told them that what she was writing.

Great guide

I am a frequent user of Lonely Planet books. Santa Fe & Taos is no different then the others, very insightful, very useful, and very easy to use. It gave great recommendations for restaurants, and for day trips, and I particularly enjoy the suggested 1 day, 2 day, 3 day... itineraries, based on the duration of your stay.
I highly recommend it.

One of the most famous books in the world, the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, read by every Renaissance intellectual and referred to in studies of art and culture ever since, was first published in English by Thames & Hudson in 1999.

It is a strange, pagan, pedantic, erotic, allegorical, mythological romance relating in highly stylized Italian the quest of Poliphilo for his beloved Polia. The author (presumed to be Francesco Colonna, a friar of dubious reputation) was obsessed by architecture, landscape, and costume—it is not going too far to say sexually obsessed—and its 174 woodcuts are a primary source for Renaissance ideas on both buildings and gardens.

In 1592 an attempt was made to produce an English version but the translator gave up. The task has been triumphantly accomplished by Joscelyn Godwin, who succeeds in reproducing all its wayward charm and arcane learning in language accessible to the modern reader. 174 black-and-white illustrations

Published in 1499, this standard of the Renaissance is here translated for the first time into English. The text apparently is difficult, and earlier efforts to produce an English-language text were abandoned. Essentially a romance, this tells the story of protagonist Poliphilo's quest for the love of Polia. More for hard-core academic collections, especially at this price.

The Strife of Love in a Dream

Dr Joscelyn Godwin, musicologist author of that most excellent book on the music of the spheres "Harmonies of Heaven and Earth" claimed that Hypnerotomachia was one of the most significant and highly prized books of the Renaissance, so I simply had to experience this for myself.
I've been plugging away at it now for almost 9 months, and nothing yet has happened. And evidently, that's the way it should be. This is a dream book. An insomniac's delight. It moves as slowly through its obsessive descriptions of the monuments, carved architectural ornaments, jewelled clothing, and occassional naked limbs of Parnassus as fruit ripening in perpetual springtime. It's a trick: A cure for lost love and reconciliation with the unattainable. And if you're having trouble remembering your own dreams, Hypnerotomachia might just help you develop the an inner language of words, symbols, and images to bridge waking and sleeping realities.
The publisher Thames & Hudson has done an exemplary job fabricating a beautiful presentation volume, reproducing all of the engravings and typogography of the original. This is truly a book of substance: a 486 page artifact of sturdy paper weighing in at 6 lbs!
(A small warning: even though Dr Godwin gives such thorough and helpful background information at the beginning, as well as charts and appendices for translation of the Latin and Greek phrases and Goddess names, do yourself the favor of avoiding p xiii, wherein the ending is blithly given away).
How to rate this book? It's not for everyone. Masons might like it. Lutenists maybe. And night owls. I'm glad I bought mine. Though I must say it took awhile getting used to reading an adjective with every noun without laughing, and descriptions of marvels never stop short of superlative ("Their hair wafted gracefully, splendidly curled in many ringlets, made with an art and artistry that outdid every lascivious design and every nymphal voluptuousness..." to pick one at random). Nevertheless, Hypnerotomachia, stopping at every leaf, stone, flower, and ringlet, has been working its slow magic, imparting a direct sense of a certain kind of highly refined Renaissance imagination. I look forward to it at night as a comfort and perhaps a key. And as a physical entity in a world of dreams, a pleasure to handle.

The Spirit of the Italian Renaissance Exemplified

Francesco Colonna's legendary "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili" is a book that captures the spirit of its time and place in a way few others do. Here, in the magical dream of the hero Poliphilus, we see classical antiquity through the eyes of the Italian renaissance, and it is not the view most students of the classics get today through Aristotle or Cicero - think instead of the Corpus Hermeticum, Neoplatonists like Plotinus, or of later Latin writers like Apuleius. It is not only in its text but in its format, its typesetting, and its illustrations, that the original edition of 1499 exemplified its age. That edition is esteemed by bibliophiles and students of typography as one of history's great landmarks in the art of book making.
The publishers of this edition have tried to reproduce, as much as is possible, the feeling of the original, while at the same time producing it on a commercially feasible scale. This leads, inevitably, to some compromises. The typesetting is very well done by modern digital techniques, the presswork is standard offset lithography and the paper a stiff dead white wove offset grade. Consequently the tactile character of the book is quite unlike original fifteenth- and sixteenth-century books. A private-press printer like Mardersteig's Officina Bodoni, or even a high-grade commercial book printer like the Stinehour Press, could have done a handsomer and more authentic job, but the book's price, already high, would then have been stratospheric. This said, the size and appearance of the pages are about as close in their resemblance to the original as is feasible using the techniques employed. A cream laid paper, more closely resembling the original, could just as easily and as economically have been used, and it is a pity that it was not.
The translation by Prof. Joscelyn Godwin is careful, and is preceded by an informative translator's preface. While the translator disavows trying to imitate the style of the original too faithfully, his work has a distinct "flavor" which struck me as familiar. It was only after some time that I realized where I had encountered it before - in some of the writings of Frederick Rolfe (Baron Corvo), for example, "Don Tarquinio." This may be a clever and deliberate device, like William Ernest Henley's translation of Fran�ois Villon's "Tout aux tavernes & aux filles" into the slang of a cockney jailbird of the 1890s. On the other hand, it may well be that both Godwin's and the Corvine mannerisms go back to the common source, and attempt to reflect in English the peculiar voice of this Italian renaissance author, whose work was published in the time and place for which the eccentric �sthete Corvo felt such nostalgia and admiration.

Gods, and bulls, and naked Greeks

This is fascinating. It attempts not only to translate Colonna's mixed Latin/Italian texts, but also to reproduce the look and feel of the original 1499 Aldine edition. Of course, all the woodcuts are there, and the typeface and layout also attempt to reproduce the original, which has long been famed as one of the most beautiful books ever printed.

The architectural and other illustrations are strange, but they are perhaps the most intriguing thing about the book. Some are reminiscent of Beardsley; others bring to mind Baudelaire's vision of a city made entirely of marble and metal, from which all plants have been banished as asymmetrical.

It will take quite a while to get through this. The peculiar mixed-language flavour of Colonna's prose is hard to reproduce in translation. The work is a long list of vaguely erotic dream-processions of gods and bulls and naked Greeks, with extensive descriptions of the architectural settings they appear in. With its unsparing strings of superlatives, it often reads like the florid descriptions of dishes found on the menu of an overreaching restaurant.

In other words, I may not finish this, but it is fun to look at.
