About the Author

Paul G. Hewitt

Former silver-medal boxing champion, sign painter, uranium prospector, and soldier, Paul began college at the age of 27, with the help of the GI Bill. He pioneered the conceptual approach to teaching physics at City College of San Francisco. He has taught as a guest teacher at various middle schools and high schools, the University of California at both the Berkeley and Santa Cruz campuses, and the University of Hawaii at both the Manoa and Hilo campuses. He also taught for 20 years at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, which honored him with its Outstanding Educator Award in 2000.

 

John A. Suchocki

John is the author of Conceptual Chemistry as well as a co-author (with Paul and Leslie Hewitt) of Conceptual Physical Science Explorations. John obtained his Ph.D in organic chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University. He taught chemistry at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and then at Leeward Community College. In addition to authoring textbooks, John is currently an adjunct faculty member at St. Michael’s College in Coldchester, Vermont.

 

Leslie A. Hewitt

Leslie is also coauthor of Conceptual Physical Science Explorations (with Paul and John). After obtaining her geology degree at San Francisco State University, Leslie’s interest in teaching broadened to include educating elementary and middle school students. She completed additional graduate work in geography and education, receiving her California State Teaching Certification, also from San Francisco State University. In addition to writing, she devotes considerable time and energy to bringing science education to young people in engaging ways.

Beware: ebook version does not have embeded videos as it is supposed to.

This was a disappointing purchase. Despite being advertised as having embedded links/videos, it did not. I contacted Amazon support about this issue in June and they said it should be fixed in 7-10 days. It's now mid-August and the issue remains.

Clear, functional guide for do-it-yourself branding

Self-proclaimed "brand guru" Simon Middleton explains in clear, easy-to-understand terms what branding is, and then he tells you how to do it in this systematic guide to do-it-yourself branding. Even though he writes for small-business owners and entrepreneurs, Middleton's process applies to large businesses and corporations as well. He makes his subject so enjoyable and even inspiring that reading his guide is like having a conversation with a witty, knowledgeable and helpful friend. However, Middleton ambitiously proposes that you undertake a different branding activity each day for a month. But, even if you decide to stretch the 30 days to three months or more, he does explain how to get the job done. And it costs a lot less than hiring an agency or consultant. getAbstract recommends Middleton's advice, if not the exact timing of his process.

It is easy to read, jargon free, and full of easy to understand relevant examples and case studies. Branding is a critical area in the success of any business and Simon's book brings the subject to life. It also keeps it nicely relevant to even the smallest of brands or start-up businesses. He makes it clear that anyone can build a brand, and helps the reader to think clearly and strategically about the subject. By the time you get to the closing chapters you will have a great set of tools to help you steer and grow your brand, as well as some thought provoking insights to consider, and some cutting edge brands to follow and learn from.

Well worth a read and great value for money.

Outstanding Guidance for developing effective instruction

There are many guidelines for designing instruction. Most provide sound guidance but are based primarily on the experience of the authors or perhaps common practice in the field. Ten Steps is based on van Merrienboer's previous work on his 4C-ID model. This model is based on careful research on the instructional process. In a previous review of this model I suggested that his previous book is a classic in the field of instructional design. Finally, a clear approach to designing training for complex knowledge

There are many books available today that give advice about how to design training. Most of them are based on approaches that were developed in the mid 1970's and a majority of them are adequate for training that emphasizes relatively simple skills. This book is based on our most current knowledge about how to support complex learning and the transfer of knowledge beyond training to work. The authors, Jeroen vanMerrienboer and Paul Kirschner are both internationally recognized university faculty who have extensive experience in business and government training. They define complex learning as involving "the integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes, the coordination of qualitatively different constituent skills and the transfer of what is learned in school or training to daily life and work settings". The ten step approach they describe is currently being used to train people who perform highly complex jobs in both North America and Europe. It has also been used by people who are developing courses for schools and universities. The training that results from their design system can be presented by instructors in classroom settings or by the latest multi-media technology. Each of the ten steps they describe is supported both by applications in a variety of settings and solid research on learning and transfer. The book focuses on describing when each of the ten steps is necessary or useful and how to implement steps. Text boxes on pages describe the research support for key aspects of each step.

In my view, this book presents a very comprehensive approach that is based on both "best practice" and "solid research". It represents the most current "state of the art and science" of learning, training and transfer and it is well worth the investment for anyone involved in instruction, corporate training or the management of training systems.

Not a Typical Paul Madriani Novel

Steve Martini is a very solid writer of courtroom thrillers, and I've enjoyed most of his novels featuring defense attorney Paul Madriani. One thing I've noticed about Martini's more recent novels (SHADOW OF POWER; DOUBLE TAP) is that the plots have become less realistic and more over-the-top. GUARDIAN OF LIES continues this trend.

GUARDIAN OF LIES is unusual for a Madriani novel because there are few scenes in the courtroom. This is not a true legal thriller. Instead, the plot is more action-oriented, with lawyer Madriani trotting the globe and trying to foil a terrorist plot to detonate a nuclear weapon in the United States.

The result is just okay. There are a lot of big-scale action scenes in GUARDIAN OF LIES, but they aren't strung together in a way that builds any sense of momentum. The characterization is mostly flat. The novel drags in places, and is probably about 100 pages too long. I found this novel engaging enough to finish, but I wasn't kept on the edge of my seat.

GUARDIAN OF LIES is smartly written and serves as a decent entertainment. My hope, however, is that Martini returns to the courtroom for his next book, and comes up wih a more down-to-earth plot than what I found here.

Paul Madriani is at it again. His law firm is more affluent than it used to be, and he gets involved in an international intrigue with Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico and California. Lots of action - will they make it into a movie? - lots of political machinations. A good yarn.

Chords and memories

When i was a kid my dad used to spare some of his time teaching me to play guitar I guess don't have interest with guitar during that time .Way back then that is the most precious time i ever had with my dad when i was a kid but now that i am adult and want to teach my son i need to know everything about guitars and chords. This is a handy companion book for those who may be working through music theory with a teacher or with a more comprehensive music theory book. The author approaches this from a different perspective than I have typically found. It is intuitive and complementary to other approaches. The book is short, but it is really helpful for those who are trying to get an elementary handle on chords.

I'm having difficulty finding the root when playing a chord. After I read this book it's been easier for me to create a pattern with each note. The 5 patterns discussed in this book was really helpful. The photo on each tutorial is a huge bonus for me and also the instruction set is clear. The other reviews for this are for the old edition and not the Brief Introduction to Education, so please be aware that the date of the reviews is before this text was published.

In reading the other reviews, it was obvious that the reviewers missed the point of the text--it is to be used in an introductory course, not in a course where preservice or practicing teachers would be designing lessons and units.

This text provides a great overview of the educational issues and problems that someone contemplating becoming a teacher needs to know about before investing time, energy, and money into obtaining certification. The brief version is much better, more up-to-date and student friendly than the original text by Sadker and Sadker.

For anyone contemplating being a teacher, the issues presented in this text may help you decide if you really have what it takes to be a classroom teacher. It gives an overview of the political, economic, and social issues facing educators as well as the historic perspective of American Education.

Well worth the cost.

We are being taught opinions from bigots

This textbook is filled with the authors biased opinions and lacking anything of any real educational value. I don't like being taught from biased sources, whether they be liberal or conservative. Plenty of times I had to stop reading because I became so frustrated by the authors bigotry. I hope teachers will not use this for their class. I have not learned anything of value from this book about the subject I was taking, but I did learn to be on the lookout for people like Sadker who want to convey bigotry in a college setting. I really felt like I wasted my time and money, but fortunately I was able to sell the book back for close to what I paid for it. I can't believe this passes as a college textbook.

This book was used for my freshman Foundations of Education course. I found the book a joy to read, and it provided a balanced look at the teaching profession. This one book that will definantly not be sold back. The supplemental materials on the CD-ROM seemed to be high quality, but I disliked having to read them on my computer and ended up ignoring the CD.

I had wanted to tell this story for many years. One of the key players in the story - Ilmor's Paul Morgan - was tragically killed in 2001 while piloting an historic WWII plane. I believed most of the story had died with him, but with the help and encouragement of Paul's son Patrick, I was inspired in the summer of 2013 to finally put the details together. I spent much of the second half of '13 in the US and the UK, researching the archives and interviewing nearly all of the key players.
It was a brilliant effort from so many to bring the engine to life - and I pushed everyday to write a book that honored their hard work and also be a compelling, intensive true mystery story for the reader.�I hope you enjoy it.Jade Gurss

Jade Gurss is the co-author of two New York Times Best Selling books. Driver #8 (Warner Books) chronicles Earnhardt Jr s rookie season. It is believed to be the most successful book about auto racing in American publishing history, spending 17 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. He also co-wrote DW: A Lifetime Going Around in Circles (Putnam Books), which reached the New York Times Best Seller non-fiction list in February 2004.

You will RIP through this.

I was not only a CART racing fan, huge Al Jr fan, and a motor-head, but I was also a machine designer back in the day, coming up with (CAD or hand-drawn) concepts but then reverting to dry ice, heat, weird materials, etc, to solve problems. All the technical stuff TOTALLY resonated

This book was perfect. The author was obviously passionate, and that shouldn't be taken for granted - not all works come across as a real labor of love, as this did.

If you love engineering, and/or love racing, especially open-wheel racing, this book is an absolute MUST-read.

Inspirational

Fantastic read! Great telling of a story about achieving the impossible through sheer determination and grit.

As an engineer and motorsports fan I found this story very compelling. It's technical and dramatic. I knew of the special Mercedes/Illmor/Penske Pushrod Indy engine, but this story paints the whole picture in vivid detail.

I'm now inspired to reach higher and work harder to achieve things I previously though we're impossible.

"The Beast" is a well written, suspenseful, & very interesting book. Guess reveals great insight into the "Penske Machine" and the politics of Indy. This book has me interested in Open Wheel Racing once again. However, I would not recommend this book to anyone not familiar with the basic principles of the internal combustion engine.
