Nice diagrams and pictures

I've always wanted to learn how to play the piano. This book not only teaches basic notes and scales but technique as well. It has nice diagrams and pictures to make learning much easier. It is very simple and has a nice step by step approach to teaching. I like that it has YouTube videos to accompany the book. It's great for the visual learner!

Thorough, yet easy

Not only does this book teach you technique and form, but also helps get that muscle memory moving by taking you deep into the pianist's mind. An example, shared quite early on in the book tells the beginner to not only play the simple three note exercise with their right hand, but to say the note names as they play as well. Incredibly simple, but also incredibly effective.

While the book is easy enough to follow along with - provided YOU have the desire and drive to learn - I must say the best part about this release is the related free video lessons on the YouTube channel. As long as you have an internet connection, you have a digital piano teacher to assure you along the way. Other books may have more detailed writing, trying to explain how to position your fingers to play a certain scale, but actually seeing it done on your computer screen is a godsend.

Overall, for the the price, and including the free video lessons, I believe this is one of the best beginner piano books out there. Now it is up to YOU to become the pianist you've always dreamt of.

It will get you playing

If you want to learn proper theory and technique then this is the piano book to get. As a piano teacher, it is nice to come across a book that covers this from the beginning to advanced levels. This is important even for the casual player. It improves performance and minimizes the chance of a hand injury. You don't want to stress the hands. If you are trying to teach yourself, check out the accompanying youtube videos.

The ebook is quite handy. Next time one of my students forget their books, I'll just pull this up on my phone! The instructions and pictures are easy to follow. I will be supplementing this to the current books I teach from. This book doesn't have songs in it. That's a good thing. Many songs in lesson books tend to be outdated. Not everyone likes that. Following this book, you'll be able to jam to your fav tunes in no time, and hopefully make up some of your own.

Nobody Writes Like Porter: Incredible

This book is perhaps the best written 500 pages bound in one place anywhere. Porter has a unique style of writing, that is hers alone. Her use of long, but salient and understandable sentences is terrific. Her use of simile and metaphor is almost unequaled. And her observational abilities and articulation of inner feelings makes her stand out as one of the best American writers of all time.
The book consists of 19 Short Stories/Long Stories/Short Novels and they are all extraordinary. In a shockingly well written story, she writes in "Pale Horse, Pale Rider" a description of going into a depressive pit, the likes of which I have never seen before, fact or fiction. Her style is so good, she leaves the reader guessing what is fact and what is fiction, in her fiction, with respect to her plot line in this very surreal story of a lady going into depression. Her characters are so intimately real life, as to make the reader feel they know them, almost personally. But what we readers know truly, is how wonderfully Porter expresses herself, and how incredible are her endings and beginnings, as well as wonderfully written middles.
No appreciator of American Literature should pass up the opportunity to read this book. In paperback, it is one of the true bargains in America today. For about 15 to 25 hours of extreme reading pleasure, this book fits the bill quite perfectly.

These stories move me and touch my soul.

"The Grave," a story about a woman whose past is as close to her as her present, is an incredible story. Like Faulkner's brilliance, she understands that men and women cannot escape their pasts, and the actions and events of youth play an indelible role in adulthood. Sometimes that past is forgotten, but small items, such as the shape of a particular hard candy, trigger emotional and poignant memories in the protagontist. This story blows me away every time I read it, and triggers fond and sad, emotional and trivial - memories - of my own childhood.

A buffet of words

Have you ever gone to an all-you-can-eat buffet and overdone it? Then left feeling stuffed but satisfied? This collection of the works of KAP is sort of like that-- you can really binge because there are so many stories, and they're all of high quality. You just want to fill your plate and "eat too much."
But you should really slow down, read some again and again. Maria Concepcion is a great tale of revenge and betrayal; "Virgin Violeta" a coming of age type story... "The Martyr" story about a famous painter (Diego Rivera type) who is in love..."Magic," "Rope," "He," "Theft"-- all of these are powerful looks into human relationships and are so well done that you really feel that you know the people that Porter describes.
Read it slowly, go back and savor the spices & intricate details of every story.

Excellent Study Guide! The only one you would ever need-

I just passed the SCJP 5.0 exam, and my only study material source was this book. I consider myself an intermediate java programmer- I had to study every chapter and their exercises quite comprehensively. I had to reread all most all chapters, 2-3 times, to grasp the content, and while actual test turned out much easier than those end chapter exercises, it helped a lot to understand the exam questions. Often during exam I chuckled at questions because this book exactly talked about them, the seemingly easy looking questions with traps and tricks to divert the attention from actual problem. I whole heartedly recommend this book for exam preparation- every single concept is explained with an example code to understand it easily. All the best to rests!
(PS: I did not take any mock exam, which ultimately affected my score as I found it hard to concentrate for 3 and half hours. I couldn't manage my time efficiently, I had to answer last 5 question in only 7 minutes. So I think not taking any mock exam was a big mistake on my part.)

1. Study the whole book, page by page, taking the tests at the end of each chapter. While studying, I had my Java IDE open to try things out. I ended up writing lots of small classes.

2. After I finished the book, I went through all the chapter reviews (these are usually 4-5 pages per chapter). Then I took all the chapter tests again, in one sitting.

3. I took the Master Exam on the CD a couple times, the day before the exam.

Basically, if you can get comfortable answering the questions on this book, you should be able to do well on the exam.

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because the CD mentions that another master exam is available for download from their web site, which I was unable to do.

Removes almost all ambiguities

An excellent study guide or reference - it helps remove many of the ambiguities that come up when you're doing something with the language, like "when exactly does the compiler insert a default constructor and what exactly is in it?" or "If this static method is redefined in a subclass but the reference is of type superclass which static method gets called and why?"

It explains many of the underlying workings of the language and the compiler and so makes it easier to remember if something will compile or not, run or not, and most importantly, why.

A great book that's already increased my understanding and grasp of Java at least 2-fold - and I'm only on chapter 3! This is from the standpoint of a programmer who took a beginner class and learned the rest by studying code samples.
