How and Why God Evolved is insightful and humourous. I haven't laughed so much since I watched Bill Maher's Religulous. Babar Khan uses a detailed and well researched view of history to build a tour deforce for the Atheist and agnostic reader. I am looking forward to his next book!

Can be helpful

Ok, let me first admit I've only read the first five chapters. But, already I can see that his method is based on the fact that you need a certain amount of settlement money to, of course, pay a settlement amount. Soooo, what about those of us who's budget is so tight with paying minimums on cards as well as other necessary monthly expenses, and don't have money put aside for settlement? I don't think the author would have had settlement money either if he hadn't received the $45k gift that allowed him to make the settlements. That's what I would like to know.

The book is not really updated

Just finished it tonight. It says the book was updated to 2012. It really isn't. The whole story happens before 2010, before the CARD Act was passed. It's written more like a novel of what he went through. The book was just ok.

I picked it up about a year ago while I was going through a ruff time getting sunk by one credit card that had been maxed out at close to eighteen thousand dollars during my divorce two years prior. I had been struggling just to keep up with minimum payments and was falling behind, my credit core had gone from a 798 to a 602. I started to use your techniques outlined in the book and in six months I finally was able to settle the debt for thirty five hundred dollars (roughly twenty percent of what I owed). I checked my credit score today, about three months after the settlement was completed, and now have a credit score of 747. This on top of my dropped blood pressure and ability to save for my children's college again has completely turned my life back on track. All I can say is thank you and I will recommend this book to anyone I run into with the same circumstance

Jean Comby's text, 'How to Read Church History: Volume 1', covers the period from the beginnings of the church to the time of the beginnings of the Reformation in the fifteenth century. It is part of a series by the Crossroad Press on how to read or study different aspects of church history, practice, and belief. Divided into ten chapters, it examines the early, pre-institutional church, the church fathers, the consolidation of the institutional church, the medieval period, the East/West split, and the overarching society known as Christendom.
This text was originally published in French, translated a few years later for the benefit of English-reading audiences. For a book that was prepared before the wide-spread influence of the internet, it bears a remarkable similarity to modern web pages in its format and design. There are boxes, highlighted areas, pull-quotes, sidebars and other features throughout -- this is no simple, boring narrative. There are charts (chronologies, canons, etc.), maps, timelines, definitions, line-art drawings, and more.
Church history is a history of people in the world. Thus, a good deal of space is devoted to explaining the world in which Christianity existed. The religion shaped the culture, and vice versa. Church history exists largely in the documentary evidence and the physical evidence from the past, so language, art, architecture, archaeology, religious and historical writings are all important. No one anthology or narrative history will be able to incorporate the fullness of Christian history (as the author admits), nor do most people (even scholars) have the time and resources needed to investigate all possible sources of information. Chapters do have recommended reading lists on each topic.
Each of the ten chapters is brief, supplemented with maps, charts, boxes, and more. The narrative history could be read in but a few sittings (perhaps, for the quick reader, even in one sitting). This can then be fleshed out by including the complementary information upon second reading. Like much of history, some memorisation of dates, persons, places, movements, etc. would be helpful -- the style of this text makes that much more easy to do. There is a great deal of diversity within the history of the church, with lots of strands that can easily become confusing. The format of this book lays out the different lines in an organised way, showing the divergences and the inter-relationships well.
This is a book of context and background. It does not take the place of doing reading in the primary texts. One will never get the true sense from Augustine's 'Confessions' by reading the summary here. However, one will get a greater appreciation for the larger Christian and Roman context into which Augustine was born and from which Augustine was writing. To this end, Comby gives suggestions on how to read the ancient texts, reminding the reader here that the worldview was quite different, and the presumed message from the the text will be different today than in the past. Also recommended are more modern surveys of history, from the different perspectives within Christianity and academia.
Interesting, accessible, full of great information, this book helps to make church history (a much neglected subject by many churches and many schools) come alive for the modern reader. Comby's intention is specifically to bring up those parts of history most relevant and useful in modern contexts and practice.

History from a Roman Catholic point of view

I will admit I found this a tad deceptive that the book was labeled as "church history" when in fact, the history presented is largely that of a Roman Catholic bias. Most of the information presented is accurate to an extent, if you consider the catholic bias, and presents a high-level overview of many of the historical events that developed through the history of Christianity, but then it veers into non-Scriptural explanations of practices like the celebacy of priests (p.139-140) a horrid distortion of God's design. And when we reach the 15th century reformation heroes like Wycliffe and Hus only get a marginal note in the "human problems" section (p.181), even though these "problems" were instrumental in breaking the shackles of Rome and returning the church to Christ-exalting sola scriptura. In fact, I've got a book called the Martyrs Mirror that details, in over 1000 pages, the history of the persecutions of Rome on the Anabaptists. No mention of any of that here, and honestly that was a much more worthy read than this bias and distorted work.

Graham is my new Book Boyfriend

Adriana has done something I didn't think was possible, she made me forget about Barrett and Lincoln Landry because Graham just blew me away! Graham Landry is the brother who takes care of all of the Landrys when it comes to business. He is the go to guy, the man who never fails, the one they all depend on. He has it totally together until the day Mallory Sims walks into his office.

Mallory is not only a beautiful woman, she is a woman with a brain, someone who takes care of things, including looking out for Graham and really seeing him for the man he is. This was the best of the three Landry stories. It is sweet, sexy, emotional, and fun. A book I will re-read more than once because it is that good.

Adriana is a very talented writer who knows how to tell a story that will keep you turning the pages. I could not put this book down. If I could give it 10 stars, I would. If you haven't read her work, you are truly missing out. This is an excellent read. I highly recommend this book and I cannot wait for Ford Landry's story

I have Adriana Locke to thank for my latest book boyfriend obsession. But really this comes as no surprise. Hot, sexy alpha men. Sweet, sassy, take-no-bull ladies. And loving, realistic families. These multilayered family of characters stole my heart in book one, Sway and then in book two, Swing – and haven’t let go since. I truly don’t want them to; I love spending time with the Landry’s, and Switch is no exception.

“This is my legacy. You have your hero medals. Barrett has his public service. Lincoln has batting titles and Golden Gloves. I have this.”

He’s a man with a plan. And a backup plan. He doesn’t deviate, he doesn’t dawdle and he certainly does. Not. Fail. Motivated by the love for his family, on the outside Graham Landry (H), CEO of Landry Holdings, comes off as an uptight, obsessive-compulsive perfectionist without a heart. Little does he know that his new Executive Assistant is going to tip his world on its axis – and make him long for something he’s never had time for – love.

With each book the couples become my favorite of the series only to be replaced with the next release. It’s incredibly easy to fall in love with this series, and Graham and Mallory in particular. For all his need to pull the stick out and relax, Graham’s propensity for order and Mallory’s tendency for chaos flies in the face of his need and is entertaining. The witty banter, the sexy, sly innuendo they trade back and forth is hot and then as the layers peel back you see the reasons for Graham’s idiosyncrasies – and Mallory’s perceptive, caring response. Deftly balancing the budding relationship with moments from family and friends rounds out this tale beautifully. It’s those moments, cleverly blended into the characters lives that cement this series, this author, on my auto-read list. This story certainly has it all – an intuitive understanding of human nature and family dynamics mixed in with hilarious banter (Lincoln almost steals the show followed closely by Ford), witty repartee (I love blunt Mallory), palpable chemistry and smoking hot sexy times (Syrup anyone?) and tangible characters that you’d like to meet (I’d love to have dinner at the Landry Farm). The lightheartedness and love that surrounds this book made me giddy, yes giddy, with happiness and I was delighted to spend my afternoon with Graham, Mallory and the rest of the gang.

“‘What you don’t know is that today was a day of firsts for me.’
He takes a deep breath.
‘The first day I woke up and stared at a woman before getting out of bed, wishing she would never leave. The first day I failed at something as the head of Landry Holdings. The first day I felt the complete and utter fear of losing someone.’”

Consistently captivating me with her genuine couples, beautiful and hilarious family dynamics and realistic and poignant take on relationships, Adriana Locke and the Landry Family Series, Switch in particular, is a definite recommended read. I fell in love with Graham and Mallory; insta-love in one page. And I hope you do too.

Loving me some Graham and Mallory!! Must Read!

This was the story of Graham Landry and Mallory Simms. We have gotten to know a bit of Graham in the previous two Landry books. He is the broody alpha, CEO of the family business. Graham is the put together one who always has a plan and always looks out for all members of the family in all aspects of their lives. Mallory Sims has just moved back to town and gets an administrative assistant role to one Graham Landry. She is picking up the pieces of a failed relationship and starting over. With her new job, broody boss and intense reaction to him, nothing could go wrong, right?

What I Loved About This Book
I was anxiously awaiting this book from Adriana. I fell in love with Graham in the previous books and could not wait for his story! Could this control hungry CEO be tamed and fall in love? Adriana did not disappoint with this one. These two characters were amazing. They were endearing from the beginning of the story. The chemistry and natural connection they had was hard not to fall in love with immediately. I love an alpha male who thinks he is in control of everything. Little do they know the right woman will shake things up and change everything they thought they knew. Enter Mallory. She is feisty, sassy and the type of female lead character I absolutely adore. She is strong willed, smart and the one person to keep Graham on his toes. This book had me laughing out loud, smiling like a cheese ball and fanning myself with the off the chart chemistry.

What I Did Not Love About This Book
There was nothing I didn’t love! It was amazing!

I happily give this books five stars and will be recommending it like a fool! It is on the must read list for sure!! Oh and bring on Ford! I am ready for him to capture my heart!!

A Must-Read!

Heads-up to all you management, HR and training folks out there-- this one's for you! "On-Demand Learning: Training in the New Millennium," by Darin Hartley is a must read if you have anything to do with learning in a corporate environment. Darin manages the Learning Technology Services Dept. at Dell and is an expert in the many issues of corporate training in an online environment. His expertise has been gained by on the job experience...so listen up!
When I was coordinating world-wide geoscience training for Exxon, I used to joke to my management that what my corporate clients wanted was training that was free, met their schedules (not the training department's), and took absolutely no time to assimilate. Something that could be stirred into a coffee cup and voila! A new skill set magically up and running in no time. Five years ago we didn't have the technology to approach that scenario, but now we do...and Darin shares his knowledge gained from years of practical experience in this book.
The central focus of "On-Demand Learning" is how to make training highly accessible within a corporate system: what are the alternatives to classroom training; what training can be delivered via alternative methods; what training cannot be delivered online; how to move into a technology-enabled learning (TEL) environment; and how to manage client expectations. This book is thoughtful, extremely well-designed, has a very high information to ink ratio and includes tons of applied examples, as well as tips for tackling the political realities of implementing TEL in any corporate environment. One of my favorites is the chapter containing Dell's TEL Strategy, which can serve as a template for any size organization. If you have anything to do with training in a corporate environment, read this chapter first. You'll understand why your own TEL initiatives either flew-- or crashed and burned!!

Timely and Practical

He has contributed and helped to direct some of the most innovative work in enterprise e-Learning through his technology role at Dell Computer Corp. This book captures alot of the lessons he has learned along the way and puts it in a refreshing framework of "on-demand learning." I recommend this book to anyone who wants a fresh perspective on e-Learning and the power of technology to improve performance.

Mathematics as a rich, human endeavor

This book is a joy. In it, the Kaplans poetically describe how they see mathematics: "For all the statement's concision [on Dijkstra's proof of the Pythagorean theorem], it has been torn from the history, associations, intuitions, and implications of the Pythagorean Theorem, and made into a cell in cyberspace that discloses nothing" (pp. 155-156). Mathematics, in this view, is one of the richest human creations ("made by minds for minds" [p. xii])---and filled with intuition and history.

I am inspired by that implicit image throughout their book, and by how the Kaplans use the Pythagorean Theorem to illustrate these themes. I am often find myself so interested in following up an idea in the text that I wish the footnotes had been placed right at the bottom of the page rather than at the end of the book.

The book is inviting in many ways. As a small example, the diagrams have hand-drawn labels, making the diagrams feel more like friends in a process of discovery rather than like finished products that mean the end of the story. Furthermore, the book's language is welcoming: The zeroth chapter ("An Outlook on Insights") ends with, "Come and see" (p. xii). And I want to.

Who should read this book? Anyone who wonders what mathematics is, and why people found and find it fascinating. In much school mathematics, the dessicated presentations of results---without the intuitions, associations, and history---kill the spirit of mathematics. This book is a wonderful antidote. It was what I had hoped, for the Kaplans co-authored perhaps my favorite book about teaching mathematics: Out of the Labyrinth: Setting Mathematics Free.

Proofs Positive

If someone says something is true, well, maybe it is or maybe it isn't. If something is demonstrated by mathematics as true, then there is a higher probability that it really is true. But if something is mathematically proven, that cinches it. A formal mathematical proof, once one accepts some basic conditions, is the strongest version of certainty we have. The Pythagorean theorem was proved long ago, and once a mathematical statement is proved, it needs no further proof. There is an allure to this particular theorem, however, that has led people to re-prove it hundreds of times. In _Hidden Harmonies: The Lives and Times of the Pythagorean Theorem_ (Bloomsbury Press), husband and wife mathematicians Robert and Ellen Kaplan have shown plenty of the proofs made in a surprising variety of styles. The theorem is not "more true" because it is "more proved," but the proofs as laid out here have something to tell us not just about right triangles, but about the concepts involved in proving something mathematically, and about larger topics in mathematics as well.

So, you take any triangle that has a corner that is a right angle; the theorem tells you that it has two short legs labeled a and b, and a longest leg (hypotenuse) labeled c, and then that a^2 + b^2 = c^2. The formula has a genuine appeal because it is so simple. Right triangles have an appeal because they are everywhere: a ladder leaning against a wall, a diagonal support on a door, a short cut across a city block, and so on. The Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, and of course Pythagoras himself play roles in the theorem's history, but the best part of the Kaplans' book is a sampling of the many proofs that have come down to us from the ancients and the moderns. The most famous one is the one in Euclid, and of course it is here, but it is far from the simplest or most elegant of proofs. There is a lovely proof involving two identical right triangles within a trapezoid. The author of this proof was none other than James A. Garfield, before he was elected president in 1880. The authors say of it (and it is true of so many other proofs in these pages), "Obvious once you see it - like so much in math; but (again, like so much in math) not at all obvious before." Leonardo da Vinci had a proof (is there anything into which that astonishing mind did not extend itself?) which the authors call "cryptic," but which is really very pretty, based on a couple of irregular hexagons which contain irregular quadrilaterals and also contain the triangle and squares on all three sides. Many of these diverse proofs were gathered by Elisha Scott Loomis, born in a log cabin in 1852, who collected Pythagorean proofs like others collect stamps. Some were his own; on 1 August 1900 he came up with five proofs. Of the proofs he collected, the authors say, some "are torturous, some teasing; some pert, some monstrous." There's a proof here based on building a gadget in the shape of a right triangle and showing that, since there is no such thing as perpetual motion, it could not move, and therefore the theorem is true. One proof was invented by Einstein (although it had been made by others before him). Another relies on filling the infinite Euclidean plane with square tiles and a diagonal grid upon them.

The famous number theorist G. H. Hardy wrote, "If you are feeling particularly hostile toward the whole universe and you want to do something evil, show this argument to your calculus students and tell them they need to learn differential equations to understand how to prove the Pythagorean theorem." He calls this "Pythagoras Made Difficult," and yes, calculus can be used in a proof. The authors joke afterwards, "`There now, wasn't that easy?' as the contortionist said to the Fat Lady." Not easy, no, but the authors are not joking when concerning a different proof they invite us to "recall from your days of trigonometry that cos (r - s) = cos r x cos s + sin r x sin s." I don't know about you, but my days of trigonometry are gone beyond recall, and plenty of the latter chapters here will be forever beyond me. That's OK; everyone hits a limit of understanding in mathematics. The geometric and algebraic proofs, however, are often surprising and lovely, and the authors display good humor throughout. They made it fun for me to trace out those shapes and equations within my comprehension, while increasing my respect for the proofs and provers I will never understand.

I bought this book because of a reference in another book. I bought a hard copy because of the Kindle review for the product. I'm not a mathematician but I do enjoy reading about math. While I understood only about 11 1/4 of the math in Hidden Harmonies, I think that the book is fantastic. It is well written and usually this is not true of math books and at times for books in general.

The concepts were presented with a great deal of clarity. There are a number of quotations that would demonstrate this but, I will share only one--"...let's linger a moment to relish a proof that depends on the impossibility of perpetual motion." "Linger" and "relish" what fantastic mathematical words.

Hidden Harmonies is a book for those who are just inquisitive about math and for those with more of an appetite for the intricacies of mathematical concepts.

I do plan to use some of the drawings of proofs in my art work so for me the math book is also an art book.

Good Essays, Poor Photo Layout

If you're buying this book hoping for photos of the great pieces on display at the exhibition, do not buy this book. There are thoughtful essays on Frank Stella in this exhibition catalog. It pairs nicely with the exhibition itself. My only criticism is that the photos of the pieces are horrendously published. Stella's work is large and the exhibition shows many of his large pieces. The publisher/authors decided to print photos of the work but have the books binding divide the photo. It ruins the photo and the greatness of Stella's work is lost.

Disappointing production values

Who designed this book? Whoever it was deserves a spanking. The paper used for the text at the front of the book is unattractive, unpleasant to the touch, the print is small, the illustrations embedded within the text are for the most part too small to be examined. The full page reproductions of Stella's work is on higher quality paper. Why couldn't the whole book be printed on the same paper?

The worst feature is the die-cut front and back covers. What a clever touch! These jagged incisions are tacky, meant to reflect Stella's sweeping lines of his Conway I creation. This is a gimmick that falls flat. I buy art books because I use them as works of reference for a long time. These ugly gashes in the covers make the book vulnerable to damage.

The book won't open flat. When I am trying to read the left hand page of text I have to hold it open to read the print down the right margin of the page. All of this detracts from the essays by Michael Auping, Adam Weinberg and Jordan Kantor. This fine exhibition at the Fort Worth Art Museum and the Whitney deserves better documentation than this.
