The Most Important Music Book I Ever Read
By Modern Blue
My main instrument is the guitar. So how can I say this piano book is the most important music book I ever read? It's because the principles expressed here extend far beyond the piano.

I'm not sure what originally drew me to it in the first place. I think there was a reference to it in another book I was reading. When I saw it had been in print since 1981 that also made an impression. My favorite guitar method book was written in the 1960's and it's outstanding. The longevity of a music book often speaks for it's relevance and value. And I wasn't disappointed in this case.

The premise of the book is that it "rebels" against conventional wisdom, or the established classical learning that prevailed around the time it was written. The main message I carried away after reading it was "if it sounds good it IS good." It doesn't matter whether it's theoretically correct. Just let your ears be the judge. Theory geeks aren't going to like this book at all. But I got it. And it has had a huge impact on my playing ever since.

I read through a long list of theory books before and after reading this book. By the way, this is not a theory book per se. At one point I said "enough is enough" and hung all the theory and just started playing. Something I came to realize about theory is that it's a way of interpreting and "codifying" if you will, what other skilled composers have written and played in the past. It helps to have some kind of starting point, or frame of reference, if you want to write and play yourself. So theory provides a structured way of learning and understanding how music is composed.

But theory will only take you so far. I think way too many people miss this important point. It's theory for the sake of creating and playing music, not theory for the sake of being theoretically correct and perfect. Eventually you have to start trusting your ears and your feelings and see where that takes you with your music. This book helped me do just that. And that is why I say it's the most important music book I ever read.

How to for Popoular Music
By Rearden Steel
The book is for people who already know how to play classical music but never learned how to develop a simple melody line into a more interesting score. This is the province of the fake book. Accordingly, the book could have been titled How to Play from a Fake Book for classical Pianists.

The book is wordy compared to many. But, that can be an advantage. Marx explains each concept and new step in detail so there can be no doubt of your understanding of his point before he moves onward.

I found the attempt at humor to be distracting as well as making the book longer than it had to be. This being a review of the third edition of the November 1976 issue. Also this edition has no index.

What makes the book so useful is that of all the topics that could have been introduced, only those that are relevant to the author's purpose are used and they are used immediately following a bit of theory.

At least one review faults the book since the concept of relative minor chords is not covered in detail. To that I would say that for a book of this nature one does not expect exhaustive explanations of music theory.

It is interesting that modern day popular music traces its routes all the way back to J.S. Bach, Brahms, Beethoven and others as is shown by way of example throughout.

The development uses the concept of stratification of the keyboard first in a simple way and then gradually developing more complexity until finally arriving at the use of the circle of fifths for the last examples.

If you have had problems grasping the concept of syncopation, then on this topic alone the book is worth the price of admission. I say this because that remark applied in spades to me. Marx furthers is explanation of syncopation with examples from Bolero Rhumba and others.

All and all this is a great book for self study. In spite of the somewhat strange humor, I gave the book 5 stars for good clear development; short easily mastered chapters; and good example adaptions as the book proceeds.

A music theory book by any other name...
By klavierspiel
This book has been around a long time. "More than 30 years in print!" trumpets the cover of the latest edition. I had never looked inside it, though, until it was called to my attention by a gentleman at an after-concert reception, who said he was teaching himself to play from it and who recommended it highly to me.

What I discovered after reading it is that "How to Play the Piano Despite Years of Lessons" is a good but quite specialized instruction book: it is for a person who knows something about music, and who just wants to play stuff: songs everyone knows, standards, Christmas carols, etc. The authors, Ward Cannel and Fred Marx, spend a lot of time trying to demystify the process of doing this and convincing the reader that it's possible. I give them credit for never saying that it's easy or doesn't require effort: despite the new names (musical "strata," using the letter "i" to mean a half-step) sprinkled throughout the text, and "myths" versus "facts" that open each chapter, most of the concepts are ones that will be familiar to anyone who has studied music theory or taken jazz piano instruction, and there is nothing wrong with that: the material is solid, and anyone who sticks with the program and can get around the keyboard with reasonable ease will end up being able to do what the authors claim: play music.

"Reasonable ease," there's the rub: Cannel and Marx spend a lot of time slamming traditional piano instruction, with its ostensibly boring scales and exercises. Admittedly, years of instruction that centers on painfully learning difficult classical pieces without any understanding of how they are constructed has produced a lot of adults who can't play anything now. But there IS a point to scales and exercises: they build physical fluency at the keyboard, the ability to get to the notes you want to play. The major weakness of this book is that it doesn't acknowledge this essential need. My guess is that a lot of folks over the years have understood the concepts presented in this book, but have nevertheless given up in frustration after they've hit that technical wall.

Bottom line: this is not the musical equivalent of a quick weight-loss diet book: some musical knowledge and willingness to put in the time and effort are necessary. I'm biased, but I also think having a supportive piano instructor would help as well.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–A comprehensive, well-documented encyclopedia devoted to Jane Austen's world as seen through her literature. More than 150 alphabetical entries range in length from a paragraph to many pages, include references to Austen's works, and describe the topics' historical and cultural significance, often in great detail. Some of the longer articles are divided into subtopics; for example, Clothing offers information on both men's and women's clothing, Outer Garments, Accessories, Fabrics, and Buying and Making Clothes. In addition, there are separate entries on Sewing, Shoes, Gloves, Hats, and Pocketbooks and Reticules. While a number of the articles deal with politics and government, for the most part, they present a view of culture and society as reflected in Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, and other, minor works. The article on Places contains maps, lists, notes, and tables of locations mentioned in Austen's books. Street maps of London and Bath are included under those entries. Throughout the set, page references to specific titles are indicated in parentheses. Most of the black-and-white illustrations are reproductions of period cartoon drawings. An extensive time line and thematic bibliography complete this work. A valuable resource for students and teachers of Austen's works as well as a cultural study of 18th-century England.–Pat Bender, The Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PA

From Booklist
Noted for their wit and insight, Jane Austen's novels depict the social and domestic lives of the English country gentry during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The world inhabited by her characters was, in many respects, also Austen's world, and this shared milieu is the focus of Olsen's compilation, which is similar in concept and format to her All Things Shakespeare (Greenwood, 2002).

The 153 alphabetically arranged articles cover a broad range of subjects, among them carriages and other modes of transportation, clothing and accessories, entertainment, food and drink, household matters, intellectual concerns, and military life. Although some articles, for example Brickbatand Under-hung, are as brief as a few sentences, the majority are considerably longer, ranging up to 38 pages for Navy. Most entries include references to instances of the topic or term in Austen's writings or her life. Surprisingly, there is no article on women, so information on their status, property rights, etc., must be gleaned from other entries, such as Marriage and Widow.

The black-and-white illustrations include line drawings and maps but are primarily reproductions of contemporary prints, which, unfortunately, often lack clarity. Captions provide identification numbers through which these images can be retrieved in high resolution and in color on a Web site at Yale University's Lewis Walpole Library. Although this unique feature will be valuable to scholars and filmmakers, most users probably will not take that extra step. Both volumes contain an alphabetical list of entries, a topical guide to article titles, and a key to abbreviations. In addition, volume 2 includes an extensive time line that correlates milestones in the Austen family with significant contemporary events, an impressive bibliography organized by broad categories, and an index. The index does not always provide adequate access. For example, it contains no entry for boarding schools, which are discussed on pages 230-32, or for colds, treated on pages 441-42.

Drawn from contemporary and modern studies, this well-written and meticulously researched work provides a convenient means for general readers, students, and scholars to gain a better understanding of the social, cultural, and political climate of Austen's time. Offering broader coverage of the period than J. David Grey's The Jane Austen Companion(Macmillan, 1986), it complements Paul Poplawski's A Jane Austen Encyclopedia (Greenwood, 1998), which focuses on characters, writings, and family members. Particularly suitable for academic and larger public libraries, it will be a useful addition in any setting where Austen's writings are read or studied. Marie Ellis

Review
"Intended to make Austen's works more understandable to contemporary readers, this publication covers the customs, manners, and landscape of her age….Arranged alphabetically, the encyclopedia has more than 150 entries, ranging in length from a few sentences (angels) to more than 30 pages (food, navy), and containing references to relevant passages from Austen's works. In addition to a bibliography of sources that includes Web sites, this work provides an alphabetical list of articles, a list of articles by topic, a time line for Austen family activities and achievements, and a corresponding one for events in the political/military, religious/cultural, medical, technological, and scientific spheres….For those serving serious Austen scholars, it will be a valuable acquisition. Highly recommended. Graduate students and researchers/faculty." - Choice

"Though it is often said that Jane Austen's novels are character-driven, primarily concerned with the fictive people she created and set in motion, independent scholar Olsen ( All Things Shakespeare) believes that Austen readers miss a lot without a fuller understanding of the culture and context in which these characters operate. This handsome and easily usable two-volume work can help readers gain that understanding. Olsen compiles extensive scholarship on the topic into more than 150 well-designed and well-written A-to-Z articles on such topics as clothing, education, politics, religion, science, business, society, and the military of 18th- and 19th-century England. Among the features that make this encyclopedia so useful are hundreds of references to passages from Austen's work, inserted parenthetically into the text of the articles, where they illuminate the topic at hand….Convenient for students and anyone else interested in exploring a particular topic, this reference would be a useful addition to pubic, school, and academic libraries serving general through undergraduate readers. Highly recommended." - Library Journal

"[A] delight - plentifully illustrated … and full of fascinating information … very difficult to stop reading once you have picked it up…" - English

"[A] valuable aid, or even primer, for anyone wishing to get more out of their reading … Olsen's writing is clear and clever. She pulls interesting and amusing anecdotes out of her source literature to illustrate points… A useful and fascinating work overall and a valuable part of any public, school, or academic collection." - Reference Reviews

"These must be two of the most useful and informative reference volumes that any library could add to its collection of Jane Austen's works… a labour of love, that is meticulously done and in very readable style." - Sensibilities

"Aimed at students and general readers, this two-volume encyclopedia provides background information on the world of Jane Austen. More than 150 alphabetically arranged entries describe various domestic items, the social scene, the workplace, religion, and everyday customs in 19th-century England. Many entries feature B&W illustrations from the Lewis Walpole Library. Special notations guide readers to passages in Austen's writings that pertain to the subject matter. Sample topics include the gentry, army recruitment, shoes, calling cards, the Napoleonic Wars, marriage, the clergy, and bathing." - Reference & Research Book News

"[S]cholars and aficionados of Jane Austen will welcome Greenwood's All Things Austen: an Encyclopedia of Austen's World. In more than 150 articles author Kirstin Olsen describes the world of Jane Austen….It successfully reflects the world in which Jane Austen lived and which she so vividly portrayed. All Things Austen will stand alongside another Greenwood title, A Jane Austen Encyclopedia as a valuable resources in the study of this ever-popular author. Both academic and public libraries will want to add it. And it is another one of those titles that could just as easily find a place in a circulating collection." - Against the Grain

"All Things Austen provides an impressive amount of well-researched information specific to Austen's era, in a user-friendly format that enables readers easily to navigate not only the encyclopedia's 800+ pages but also relevant references in Austen's works themselves….For the casual Austen reader, All Things Austen enhances one's appreciation of her novels by illuminating nuances otherwise missed. For writers, scholars, and other professionals who need to understand the intricacies of life in Regency England as intimately as we know our own, this encyclopedia will no doubt become a favorite and much-used reference." - JASNA

"Readers looking for plot summaries of Jane Austen's novels or quick biographies of her characters are likely to be surprised when consulting Kristin Olsen's examination of the world depicted in Austen's works. The personal travails of Elinor Dashwood or Emma Woodhouse are not the meat of her rambling essays. Instead her themes are the cultural contexts that defined the interests and opportunities of Austen's characters. Her 150 articles explore the broader understandings of the landed class in Regency England regarding science, education, law and religion, as well as their prejudices toward servants, Gypsies and Jews….For fans of Jane Austen, or for those seeking a better understanding of this historic period, the guide will prove enlightening. For more information on food and drink of the period, readers should see Olsen's equally entertaining Cooking with Jane Austen." - Lawrence Looks at Books

"Any compendium is bound to fascinate, and dipping into this one throws up all sorts of serendipitous delights … [a] useful and enjoyable book." - Janes Austen Society News Letter

"Drawn from contemporary and modern studies, this well-written and meticulously researched work provides a convenient means for general readers, students, and scholars to gain a better understanding of the social, cultural, and political climate of Austen's time. Offering broader coverage of the period than J. David Grey's The Jane Austen Companion (Macmillan, 1986), it complements Paul Poplawski's A Jane Austen Encyclopedia (Greenwood, 1998), which focuses on characters, writings, and family members. Particularly suitable for academic and larger public libraries, it will be a useful addition in any setting where Austen's writings are read or studied." - Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin

"A comprehensive, well-documented encyclopedia devoted to Jane Austen's world as seen through her literature. More than 150 alphabetical entries range in length from a paragraph to many pages, include references to Austen's works, and describe the topics' historical and cultural significance, often in great detail….A valuable resource for students and teachers of Austen's works as well as a cultural study of 18th-century England." - School Library Journal

"Any college-level student studying Jane Austen's fiction will find All Things Austen: An Encyclopedia of Austen's World an essential reference, packing in over 150 entries about the objects mentioned in her novels, the social mores of her times, and the history of the era….A fabulously detailed speciality reference." - MBR Bookwatch

"[R]eadable and informative….[a] rich garnering of the kinds of information about the past which are most difficult to find." - Times Literary Supplement

Review
Praise for
I’m Happy for You (Sort of…Not Really)

“Kay Wills Wyma once again champions a much-needed culture shift—with heartfelt insight she challenges us to choose contentment over comparison. I’m Happy for You gently exposes the growing obsession with self-promotion and one-upmanship that’s wearing us all out and, thankfully, offers wise solutions.”
—Tracey Eyster, Founder of FamilyLife’s MomLifeToday.com; author of Be the Mom and Beautiful Mess

“Kay Wills Wyma captured my attention with her belly-laughing good storytelling steeped in reality as she tackled a question that’s long overdue for an honest answer: What should we do about this comparison trap we find ourselves falling into daily? When comparison steals contentment, it’s a problem that demands a solution. Kay gives it to us in a way that is easy on the heart and good for the soul.”
—Elisa Pulliam, author and life coach

“Who knew comparison was so prevalent and destructive? Awakening to this alone is worth the time invested in reading this honest and sometimes raw literary gem. Comparison’s thievery of joy is arrested by the ‘just let it go’ practicality Kay offers so transparently and humorously. It might just put you on the path toward contentment and gratitude, a road less traveled.”
—Robin Pou, executive coach and attorney mediator; coauthor of Performance Intelligence at Work

“Kay Wyma has managed to address what we’re all dealing with on a daily basis—the ability to instantly compare our life to someone else’s with just a mere look at our phone. There we can see all the ways we are failing to be the best mom, the best wife, the best friend…and the list goes on. In the pages of I’m Happy for You, Kay offers insight into why we do this and how we can stop the cycle. If you’re looking to live a life of contentment and authenticity and to be okay when your kid is the C student and not the valedictorian, you’ll find comfort and realistic solutions in the pages of this book.”

—Melanie Shankle, New York Times best-selling author of Sparkly Green Earrings
“I’m Happy for You is honest and funny, while tackling a serious problem that is stealing our joy: comparison. Kay creatively uses stories and personal confession to reveal the pitfalls of comparing, while offering a solid ladder—built on godly wisdom—to help us climb out of that pit. I wish I could pass this book on to every woman who has worn herself out trying to achieve unrealistic standards. There’s freedom on these pages.”
—Jennifer Dukes Lee, author of Love Idol

“Kay Wyma hit a home run on the Focus on the Family radio program when she talked about ways moms can combat the entitlement mentality in their kids. In her new book, she scores another hit with an insightful discussion of the pitfalls of comparing your life to others, especially through social media. Her advice is timely and relevant.”
—Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family

“Victims of comparison drive-bys litter the Internet. There are virtual warehouses of new ways to covet your neighbor’s home, decorating skills, summer vacation plans, or Pinterest-perfect kids’ birthday parties. In this paralyzing culture of obsessive comparisons, this book is the detox we all need. With a sense of humor and an unrelenting honesty, Kay walks us through the steps to finding our worth again in the God who never compares us but always only calls us by name.”
—Lisa-Jo Baker, community manager for (in)courage; author of Surprised by Motherhood

“There is no joy to be found in comparing ourselves to others. Fortunately, with both cultural relevance and biblical foundation, Kay Wills Wyma accurately defines not only the comparison problem, but offers a solution. I’m Happy for You is a must-read for anyone caught in the comparison trap.”
—Joshua Becker, best-selling author of Simplify; founder of Becoming Minimalist

“For years I’ve said ‘Comparison is the kiss of death of gratitude.’ Whether we stroll the shopping malls, thumb through catalogs, shop online, or inadvertently compare ourselves to others, we are imperceptibly overwhelmed with longings to be like someone else, to have something else, believing it somehow enhances our identity. The pursuit of bigger, better, newer, and more never stops. With a compelling lilt, Kay Wills Wyma’s pen pulls us along only to expose and confront our comparison battle. From one co-struggler to another, Kay brings us perspective and relief.”
—Dr. Michael Easley, former president of Moody Bible Institute; teaching pastor; host of Michael Easley inContext

“Kay Wills Wyma has opened a powerful window on the reality of comparison and how it’s impacting all of us, including vulnerable young lives. With social media, instead of just keeping up with the Joneses, we’re now keeping up with the world. Kay navigates us through the pressures we all face and teaches us how to be genuinely happy for others and deliberate about our current situation and future plans at every stage of life.”
—Kathy Ireland, chair/CEO/chief designer at kathy ireland Worldwide

Encouraging and Positive, But...
By Susan Barton, Reviewer
I really wanted to like this book. I was excited about the message: Being happy with who you are and what you have. Living in the moment. Don't risk missing precious moments because you're too busy wanting to be like someone else. In fact, one early quote really resonated with me:"Looking at what we lack prevents us from noticing how sweet the world already is. But when we shift our focus from what could be to what actually is, we find extraordinary joy in our ordinary lives." What a lovely and positive sentiment. Plus I liked the book's catchy, humorous title.

I really hate when I'm one of the few people who isn't raving about a particular book, but I had some difficulty raving about this one. Early on I began to feel as though the author and her friends spend a great deal time envying everyone around them. For me, the constant "comparison obsession" just didn't seem realistic. Real, everyday life is just too darn hectic to spend so much time ruminating over what everyone else has or does - at least for me it is. Maybe a fleeting thought here and there, but all the time? Highly unlikely. Yet the author confides that she "struggles with comparison almost from the minute (she) gets out of bed." This is an actual quote from the book. At one point she went on for several pages about how she had agonized over what embarrassing things her friend might have seen in her refrigerator when she brought over some brownies. It also struck me as though Ms. Wyma was trying very hard to make her case for what she's coined, "obsessive comparison disorder". Even going back to biblical times to suggest the story of Adam and Eve is really about Eve's sudden knowledge that "someone had something she didn't" (and perhaps not about temptation and disobedience to God as we may have originally thought?).

When the author started discussing the impact of social media on society and the obsession with achieving the perfect body I thought I'd find some good information. But instead I found generalized and empty statements that served to further group everyone together as a dysfunctional whole. Things like "each of us carries a mental mirror..." and "Glamour magazine recently conducted a follow-up survey from thirty years ago...the results revealed that women feel worse about themselves today." A Glamour magazine survey is in no way reliable enough to sway me one way or another about anything and I'm too darn busy to carry a mental mirror around with me all the time. I have a difficult time with books that try to group all of society together in order to make a point.

I do have to say that the author has included some positive and encouraging tidbits in the form of quotes, sayings and footnotes. She's clearly intelligent and her writing is easy to read. She's also a woman of faith and that comes through in her words. (Although, when she talked about buying flowers for a woman who stole her parking spot at the grocery store I admit I did a mental eye roll.) There is a definite religious element in this book that readers may or may not appreciate, depending on their own beliefs. I think the author's heart was in the right place, but the delivery just wasn't there - at least it wasn't for me.

Much-needed book for our culture
By Denise McFarland
I'm Happy For You {Sort Of...Not Really}: Finding Contentment In A Culture Of Comparison by Kay Wills Wyma is a much-needed breath of fresh air for our current culture that measures people's worth on the size of their house, the model of their car, how many likes their Facebook and Instagram posts get, and what clothes they wear. I notice that I've struggled with the problem of contentment and comparison much, much more since Facebook and social media was created: people frame their lives by snapshots of the best moments, the best meals, the best outfits, and more - but no one sees the reality behind the scenes and feels like they don't live up to the false standards. I'm Happy For You is a decisive attack on the culture of comparison. The book description reads:

"Is comparison living hijacking your life?

Do you find yourself measuring your value against your friend’s house, body, marriage, resume, paycheck, organic garden, or Pinterest-worthy holiday dcor, and coming up lacking? Do your college roommate’s Instagram snapshots bear little resemblance to the scene at your house this morning?

Excessive comparison and competition sap our energy and steal our joy. Our friends become our audience and judges, and our kids become part of our brand. Add social media’s constant invitation to post and peruse, and it’s no wonder that we’re left exhausted, discontent, and lonely. Thankfully, there is another way!

With refreshing candor and humor, Kay Wyma shares her experiences with comparison living and offers readers the simple remedies that helped her and her family reboot their perspective and discover freedom, authenticity, and joy."

This book is divided into 12 chapters, covering keeping up appearances, our obsession with others, coming to terms with the inequalities of life, and more. Kay writes in an easy to read, interesting, and funny style. This is a pretty quick read, but there is a lot of truth to soak in. I feel like this should be required reading for everyone today - personally, I have had to step back from much of social media and I'm a much happier person as a result. Our focus needs to shift on being content with what we have rather than comparing what we have with everyone else we know. We can't find peace in God when we're constantly struggling with discontentment. Kay has a way of cutting to the chase and offering practical solutions and steps to true contentment. I highly recommend this book to everyone struggling in this area.

Light, breezy read
By Paula Vince
The 'Obsessive Comparison Disorder' described in this book is the sort of trait we don't find socially acceptable to admit to, so it's interesting to come across books which deal with it. This one is more of a light, breezy read than a dense, heavy one, and I might have preferred something more in the middle. I didn't like the first half of this book, but loved the second.

At first, most of Kay Wyma's examples seemed to be focused on FWPs (first world problems). Empty car parks getting stolen, visitors catching sight of crammed fridges and clothes on bathroom floors, girls comparing their thigh gaps. No doubt we've all been agitated by these types of things, but after several pages of reading about someone else dealing with them, I was finding it a bit much.

The solutions she offers come across more like non-solutions at times. In the author's own words, 'What if we stop looking at others to envy them, and instead look at them to appreciate them and celebrate their success?' Really? Apart from stating the obvious, isn't that a bit like telling a lame man, 'You could cross that road, if you just get up and walk'? Sure, we may need to change our mindsets, but how about some tools to help us figure out how, rather than circular arguments. Question: How do we overcome envy? Answer: Stop being envious.

Also, I was noticing a few too many pearls of wisdom in the form of, 'I told them this.' Once again in the author's own words, 'At this point I couldn't stop myself steering both of us toward truth.' On the whole, Kay Wyma doesn't come across as a smug person, but these were getting frequent enough to count. Maybe it's just a mother's reflex. That might be another thing. I too have a family of kids ranging from young adults down to smaller ones, so I could relate to her, but wondered whether she might be losing other readers with different life circumstances.

The second half improved out of sight. She delves into more meaty matter, such as the fact that no life path we choose is likely to measure up to our unrealistic expectations in every respect. This is wisdom we'd do well to know, because we have more chance of sticking to the course happily if it doesn't take us by surprise.

But what I liked best is when she explained how our cultural bias toward quantifying everything puts unnecessary pressure on all of us. The social media age just compounds the problem. How many attendees, subscribers, viewers, likes, fans and facebook shares do we have? We're encouraged to get a handle on the 'Personal Branding Movement' and make sure we have neat, pithy, consistent messages across multiple platforms; blog, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn. And personal development lists are rife across social media, just giving us more ammunition to feel guilty about not living up to. Just drawing our attention to the craziness we all call normal is enough to help us draw a deep breath and take a step back. I found it worth plowing through the rest of book just for this part.

Thanks to WaterBrook Multnomah, Net Galley and Blogging for Books for my review copy.

Fear Never Dies.

Deep in the Alaskan wilderness, a mummified body is discovered in the ice, the victim of a bizarre ritualistic killing that happened nearly six thousand years ago. For journalist Maura County, this story is her ticket to the big time--if she can get the help of the FBI's top criminal profiler.

Special Agent Ulysses Grove is the best of the best--a born manhunter. He's also a man on the edge, haunted by both personal tragedy and a recent spate of horrific, unsolved homicides. Now, in a remote lab, he's about to make a shocking discovery. Everything about the prehistoric murderer--signature, M.O., the tiniest of details--matches up to the serial killer who has eluded Grove for months.

As past and present collide, County and Grove are plunged into a nightmare journey that will take them into the darkest reaches of the human heart as they try to stop a cycle of evil as eternal and powerful as time itself. . .

Bonansinga's Best
By J. A. KONRATH
I've been a longtime fan of Jay Bonansigna, since Black Mariah and Killer's Game. He's is a master at writing fiction that plays like a movie in your head. You hear the dialog. You see the brutality. And this movie is one hell of an adventure.

A modern-day serial killer is following an M.O. that goes back thousands of years. The ensuing manhunt is full of twists and scares, playing out like a prehistoric episode of CSI.

If you've never read Bonansinga before, this is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in his slightly perverse, somewhat twisted, and always entertaining world.

Shirley The Bookworm
By S. Herron
This was my first time with this author and I really enjoyed the book. Thinking it was the typical serial killer type book it came as delightful surprise when the supernatural was introduced. I could hardly wait to read the next book with the Grove charcter. I hope the author keeps them coming

Disappointing
By Airplane Reader
Despite a dashing and brilliant Special Agent, a touch of the supernatural, fabulous locations, and prehistoric intrigue, this "thriller" sadly isn't thrilling. The premise is interesting, but the supernatural elements are not persuasively woven into the law enforcement thriller and historical interest elements. Instead of emerging as the only possible explanation for a series of crimes, the paranormal events overpower the plot and characters from the start, and too many characters have too many cold fingers touching their spines too often. Even outside of the explicitly paranormal realm, numerous critical events in the plot are utterly implausible (for example, a huge gathering of academics from all around the world -- organized on short notice by e-mail invitation). The characters themselves also show initial promise but are insufficiently drawn, including a protagonist whom we want to like and admire but who is inexplicably inconsistent. Indeed, where character detail is added it feels artificial and is at times unbelievable -- for example, the love interest in the book seems forced, based on what we know about the characters. I further was bothered by the liberties taken with descriptions of real places (such as the University of Alaska). And the book suffers from internal inconsistencies and factual problems that a good edit should have helped the author avoid. Even for a casual vacation or airplane read, I found this story flawed.

Mischief and the Masters (Masters of the Shadowlands) (Volume 12), by Cherise Sinclair

She wants a short, sweet Master. One Master.
The two devastatingly dominant Drago cousins have other ideas.

Her life destroyed by a stalker, Uzuri Cheval starts anew in Tampa and joins the exclusive Shadowlands club. Unconvinced of her claims that she can overcome her fear of big men without help, Master Z gives her a time limit. And she is improving--until she hears the stalker is out of prison. Now her time limit is up, and the Masters will intervene, which is okay--as long as whoever helps her is short. Okay, sweet and gentle would be good, too.

But two Doms? Dangerously experienced and dauntingly powerful cousins? No way.

Having volunteered in every hellhole in the world, Dr. Alastair Drago is ready to settle down. Detective Max Drago has joined him and, once again, the cousins share everything. A house, lives, problems…and whatever submissive catches their interest. One mischievous submissive has definitely caught Alastair’s. However, having been burned by a woman, Max remains detached…until little mischief’s troubles turn deadly.

Mischief and the Masters is the latest book in the bestselling Masters of the Shadowlands series. If you enjoy edgy mnage and dominance spiced with humor and suspense, you’ll love Cherise Sinclair’s latest romance.

This book had it all… Another great addition in one of my all time favorite series!!

Another great addition in one of my all time favorite series!!
By Cindy O
Shadowlands favorite prankster finally meets her match in two sexy Doms. For two years Uzuri has avoided telling her story and facing her past. Master Z gave her a time limit to do both and that time has come – and we all know Master Z always gets his way.

Uzuri Cheval left a horrific past behind and moved to Florida. She has a great job as a fashion buyer for a huge department store, and she has made friends with fellow subbies. Uzuri is the type of friend that would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it but yet if she needed to call on a friend for help she never do it. Her past left her with many fears. Along with not having the confidence in thinking her friends would be there for her she is also scared of large men which has made it impossible for her to find a Dom to top her. When strange things start happening she fears her past has come back and her take flight instincts kick into high gear.

We all know how Master Z likes to play matchmaker and he's set his eyes on Alastair and Max Drago to be the Dom's who finally break down all the barriers that Uzuri has built up. Problem is Alastair is the only one ready to settled down, his cousin Max not so much due to something from his past.

This book had it all. There were so many laugh out loud scenes between the Shadowkittens. Finally getting to know the pasts of Uzuri, Alastair and Max and how all three of them help the other deal not only with their past but also help each other deal when they have a bad day at work. There is also plenty of suspense and let me tell you the final showdown was twisted. If Cherise ever wanted to branch out into writing serial killer books I'd think she be a master at it (' get it)

Another great addition in one of my all time favorite series!!

Great Series, Ok Book
By Rachael Ragsdale
I really enjoy this series, and loved getting to read Uzuri's story. However, not a great book in the series. I'm a little over the female characters having a past of abuse. After the first couple of books that keeps coming up over and over. It's kind of like she combined Andrea and Beth's issues and got the story line for Uzuri. Then throw in two doms.

Additionally, this book just needed some editing. There are continuity errors. For example, in Andrea and Cullen's book, Cullen's mom is passed. However, in this book he has a mother/son dance at the wedding. Also, slightly offensive language. Like describing eyes as having an oriental tilt, is culturally insensitive. In previous books Uzuri's hair was described as kinky. Not really ok either. I'm going to keep reading the series, because I love the characters. However, this book felt a little thrown together and not really loved on enough.

Too much recycled material.
By Moony Blues
I finished the book around 2:00am last night and decided to sleep and reflect on it before reviewing. It was merely okay. I've loved this series, and the Masters of the Mountain/Masters of Dark Haven series, for a while now. But there were too many elements and plot devices in this book that appeared in previous books for my liking.

It echoed If Only almost point for point. Insecure submissive, in this case Uzuri, gets injured and two of the Masters of the Shadowlands take her home for a few days to keep an eye on her recovery. She decides to have them help her with a serious issue, so she moves in for a while. Something bad happens, and she assumes all of the blame and guilt, breaking off the relationship and running away. Sound familiar to anyone else? Granted, that isn't the entire plot. Phsycotic stalkers seem to exist in larger numbers in Sinclair's world than they do in reality. It seems to be one of her favorite plot devices.

In addition to the recycled material, the characters are becoming stale and almost two-dimensional. Uzuri isn't the first of the Shadowlands submissives to have deep personal issues that come from a past lover who turned out to be a crazed stalker. Max isn't the only LEO in the series to have occasional troubles dealing with the stress of his job. Alastair isn't the first medical professional who lets patient situations beyond his control come home with him to bleed all over the people for whom he cares. Sinclair has found comfortable niches with these kinds of characters and situations and doesn't seem to want to try anything different.

Also, for being the supposed worst pranksters in the club, Uzuri didn't seem to be as into the pranks as her reputation. Sally was more active and creative in If Only, despite her own deep personal issues. It certainly didn't fit with Uzuri's characterization in previous books.

Bottom line? After 11 books and a novella, Cherise Sinclair has become entirely too comfortable with this series, and she's left the door open for more. I will give the next one a try, but if it isn't substantially better than this one, I'll not read further in the series. Overall, Mischief and the Masters was okay, and if you've stuck with the series this far and want to know why Uzuri is the way she is, it might be worth your while. Otherwise, you might not find it to be worth your time.
