About the Author

Lorna Woods is Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Research at City University, London and a member of the Institute for the Study of European Law at City University. Before moving to City University in 2008, Professor Woods taught at Sheffield University and Essex University. Her research areas are in EU law, particularly free movement rights, as well as broadcasting law and policy. Her publications include European Broadcasting Law and Policy (with J. Harrison, CUP 2007).

Philippa Watson is Professor of Law at City University, London and a Barrister at Essex Court Chambers, London. She is also a member of the Institute for the Study of European Law at City University. Her work is mainly in the area of EU law and competition. She is the author of EU Social and Employment Law (OUP 2009).

Addictive series. Great for binge reading.

From LINGER 1 to LINGER 4: HERE THERE BE MONSTERS, you will be hooked as you travel from city to city with Christopher, Kate and Noah on their quest to stop the mastermind behind unspeakable crimes--the man they call the Beast.

Each book unravels new twists and challenges that the characters must confront, solve and most of all, keep themselves out of the clutches of the Beast’s torturous plans for them.

In LINGER 4: Here There Be Monsters, I was again hooked into the plot immediately and became captivated by the storyline and the secondary characters, each added yet another layer of mystery and suspense. In this novel, we are introduced to a few secondary colorful characters, creating a perfect balance to lighten up the intense scenes.

The author pulls you in flawlessly, and you feel you are right there with the characters, as they battle their own internal demons as they fight to stay one step ahead of the Beast.

I got chills reading about the real-life atrocities in the Texas Killing Fields. The strength of the author’s writing allowed him to take a real-life, tragic landmark and utilize it into the story in a gripping, realistic manner, adding to the grit and suspense of the series theme.

The circumstances in which the three protagonists find themselves in, include supernatural elements; however, those elements are interlaced into the storylines in a believable manner, filled with emotion and vulnerabilities, making each character and their own personal journey and their team effort relatable.

You will find yourself caring about each character, and looking forward to the next book, as the layers are peeled back, and you will not only root for them, but you will look forward to getting to know even more about Noah, Christopher and Kate.

The author does an excellent job at weaving in a back-story for each character, and allowing the reader access to what is tearing at their souls as they use their gifts and strengths to face a new day, in a new city on their tiring, and at times, gut-wrenching and always dangerous journey to bring down the Beast.

Their decisions and actions make it seem real, and the writing brings the reader into the story so much so, you feel as if you are right there with each of one them.

In LINGER 4: Here There Be Monsters, Christopher, Kate and Noah find themselves in Texas, risking their lives as they are led into a maze filled with terrifying consequences, especially for Kate.

I got chills imagining myself in Kate’s situation, which for me is the sign of an imaginative, strong writer.

Gritty, suspenseful, edge of your seat suspense, LINGER 4: Here There Be Monsters, as like the other three books before, does not disappoint.

This story unfolds at a good pace, allowing the reader time to get accustomed to the new city, to the developing relationship each character has with each other, and building up to a nail-biting climax that will have you holding your breath.

Chills and thrills!

This book scared the living daylights out of me! You could cut the tension with a knife. I loved the female cop--what a tough lady--and Edward Fallon clearly knows from law enforcement.

But what really got me was the suspense--it was just like the screws on a violin. With every twist and turn, the screws got tighter.

I started with this book. It's so good, I will be going back to read the other volumes.

After coming up empty handed in Texarkana, Texas, Kate persuades Weston and Christopher to head to Austin. Kate uses her contacts from her past in law enforcement to obtain a speedy private investigator license that allows her to carry concealed weapons.

While in Austin the team is drawn to the Texas Killing Fields where countless bodies have been discovered dumped since the 1970’s. When they get to Austin, Christopher begins having seizures and crying out about “Monsters”. This leads to Kate investigating on her own while Weston cares for Christopher which puts Kate in grave danger.

Linger 4 kept me up reading into the wee hours to find out if Kate would survive this investigation. The pace of this series does not slow down one bit in Linger 4. I couldn’t read it fast enough to find out what was going to happen. Here There Be Monsters just whets ones appetite for more in this series.

Very Insightful Textbook

I am using this book for a Criminology class (a part of my minor in Criminology).

My professor is amazing, but this book definitely clarifies a lot of information and prepares you well for tests (as long as your professor is using this as a guide for those). Some text books are really boring, bland and don't keep your attention, but this definitely not one of those.

The chapters on offenders and victims are particularly interesting. The first chapter isn't the most exciting, but after that it really picks up. The book includes charts and pictures, as well as different small articles on current/past issues in both the U.S. and other countries.

If you need this book for a class, you'll definitely enjoy it!

It is nice to be able to rent text books and not have to purchase them unless you want it for your personal library. This is a great alternative and just as easy, or easier, than renting from the college or college approved book stores.

In this insightful study of how the American media has portrayed women over the past 50 years, Douglas ( Inventing American Broadcasting: 1899-1922 ) considers the paradox of a generation of women raised to see themselves as bimbos becoming the very group that found its voice in feminism. Modern American women, she suggests, have been fed so many conflicting images of their desires, aspirations and relationships with men, families and one another that they are veritable cultural schizophrenics, uncertain of what they want and what society expects of them. A single image--Diana Ross of the Supremes, for example, or Gidget from the popular sitcom--can send mixed signals, Douglas shows, at once affirming a woman's right to a voice and cautioning her not to go too far. Thus the media is often both a liberating and an oppressive force. Douglas is particularly attentive to the ways pop culture's messages have responded to shifting social and economic imperatives, including the feminist movement itself. While she asserts that pop culture can have a profound impact on one's self-perceptions, she also stresses that women, by the example of their own lives, have changed--mostly for the better--the way the media represents them. In the current reconsideration of the popular culture of the baby boomers, the cultural contribution of men is emphasized. The neglect of the cultural history of women from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s worries critic Douglas. In an engaging personal tour through the landscape of television, popular music, new media, and advertising, she retrieves that history while exploring the mixed messages the media delivered to women. She claims that popular girl singing groups like the Shirelles offered new possibilities for female assertiveness, while the television show Bewitched portrayed a woman using magic to escape dull domestic chores. Emphasizing complexity, she relates the ambivalent treatment of women in popular culture to the evolution of the women's liberation movement. Douglas, a professor of media studies at Hampshire College and author of Inventing American Broadcasting: 1899-1922 (LJ 11/1/87), translates intricate academic ideas into witty and accessible prose. This entertaining book fills a gap in cultural history and belongs in public and academic libraries.

Who says scholarly writing can't be fun?

Reading this book is like spending a long weekend with a new friend about your own age, wallowing in music and decades-old sitcom reruns while you trade memories that begin "Did you ever see . . . ?" and "Remember the one about. . . ?" You laugh yourselves silly, but also come away with a new appreciation for how TV, movies, and music helped you define who you were and how you saw the world.
OK, I'll be honest. _Where The Girls Are_ is also a first-rate introduction by example to the field of media studies, a brilliant defense of feminism, a scathingly funny critique of American broadcast journalism and an insightful exploration of the complex ways that girls and women relate to the steady stream of female images they're fed by the mass media. But if I led with that paragraph, the book wouldn't sound like it was any fun at all. And it *is* fun. Oh, my, is it fun.
Susan Douglas starts from the idea that, although her experiences and those of her friends (white, middle-class, suburban, straight, Baby-Boom-era women) aren't universal, they *can* be used to illustrate larger truths about how people relate to the mass media. She proceeds, for 300 pages, to do just that. Her analyses are always sharp (you will *never* look at "Charlie's Angels" the same way again), and her prose is as far from academic-ese as you can get: funny, pointed, and (when the subject warrants it) wrath-of-God angry at some of the manifest injustices she describes.
Read this book. Even if you're not part of the Baby Boom generation. Even if you're not a woman. Trust me.

Like eating ice cream from the container...

This book chronicles the images of females in baby-boom popculture and how they reflected and shaped politics.
Because women have been historically consigned to the private sphere of home and hearth, the idea that our tv and mass media images can alter society is a riveting idea. Douglas then backs up this thesis with an admirable amount of intensive research and personal recollection that travels from Gracie Allen to Northern Exposure.
Although the book was primarily intended for babyboom women's culture, I am old enough to remember the rise of the superwoman as personified in Wonder Woman and Charlie's Angels and how this new genere was designed for both male tittilation and female admiration. Meanwhile, myself and other first graders loved the show because people who looked like us (hopefully when we were older) were the center stars of the show.
While I am now eagerly awaiting a revised and expanded edition with chapters on Buffy, Xena and Charmed, the book still provides an excellent example of the un-ending struggle between feminist and anti-feminist influences in the American mass media. No self-respecting feminist of any age ought to be without this awesome and well-researched tome.

witty pop culture tour

"Where the Girls Are" is a tour through and a look at how pop culture affected girls and women. It is a thought provoking, sarcastic, and very witty portrayal from a woman who admits to having an "attitude problem." The targets are taken from literature, movies, TV and music, and include everything and everyone from "Bewitched," The Shirelles, "Sex and the Single Girl," Charlie's Angels, Murphy Brown and Madonna. She also examines famous feminists'impact including Kate Millett, Gloria Steinem and Bella Abzug. The book contains plenty of quotes from anti-feminists, as well, to show (at least in this reviewer's eyes) just how ridiculous if often effective the opposition to the Women's Movement was.

One thing. The author laments that role models in children's literature are "few and far between." Either she is making a blanket statement, or she has no experience. Young adult and children's lit, even back in 1994 when the book was published, are a treasure trove of strong, positive female heroines.

About the Author
Many contemporary authors focus only on the Great Pyramid and consider what might be possible. Charles Rigano focuses on the archaeological record to see where it leads him. He has been studying Old Kingdom architecture for 25 years and his earlier articles on the Bent Pyramid interior, Sneferu's pyramid at Meidum, the small subsidiary pyramid recently uncovered near Khufu's Pyramid, and on pyramid building all provided new insights on these old subjects. His ideas and proposals are in keeping with conventional Egyptological thinking. Charles Rigano spent seven years researching and writing this book. He studied the writings of ancient travelers, what early scientists found when they first entered the pyramids and when they uncovered the monuments, and the works of modern Egyptologists. He combined this research with his own on-site observations to form this complete “picture” of the ancient Giza monuments.

A Passion for Pyramids

Like thousands of others, I am an Egyptophile and have studied ancient Egypt for more than two decades. Some of us first became fascinated by mummies, for others Akhenaten was the lure; but many of us developed a passion for pyramids. This preoccupation led us to read all we could find on the subject, and, for those who were able, to visit the monuments themselves. I wish a book like this had been available twenty years ago!

Charles Rigano’s book on the Pyramids of Giza performs a valuable service by drawing together an immense amount of information from sources ranging from the earliest explorers to the latest archaeological discoveries. I will quote a few numbers to show what an enormous contribution he has made on this popular topic. Among his 222 references are many that are out of print or available only in specialized libraries, while his 400+ endnotes testify to the rigor of his research and allow a curious reader to penetrate further into the primary literature.

Rigano supplements his literature review with first-hand observations – made during a number of extended visits – to provide vivid descriptions and a large number of photographs of seldom-seen areas. His decision to devote an entire 220 page book to the three Giza pyramid complexes was made after his long, and often frustrating, study of the available pyramid books. Even the most comprehensive of these treat the entire Giza group in fewer than 30 pages. There is much, much more to learn about the Giza pyramids, and Rigano both provides more information about each pyramid as well as treating the entire plateau as a coherent funerary site developed over the reigns of three Dynasty IV kings. The book includes information about the subsidiary pyramids, temples and causeways, the Sphinx, and building technology. He also offers new ideas about some outstanding mysteries while staying well within the conventional Egyptological canon as supported by archaeological findings.

Anyone who has seen the pyramids, will want to read this book to better understand their own observations and to see what they have missed. Arm-chair travelers will find everything they could want to know in a concise, readable format illustrated with hundreds of excellent photographs and diagrams. If you only buy one more book about pyramids, this should be the one!!

An informative read on pyramid construction

This book about the Giza pyramid complexes is not so much a how or why description but a more a what was done during the building and investigation of these structures.

You won't read if the stone blocks were moved by slaves, hired help, or aliens. And there isn't much conjecture as to the purpose of say the Queen' s Chamber. But there is a notation that a number of the lower courses of blocks are of a different dimension than those above.

I only gave this book four stars due to its graphics. There needs to be more drawings and the black and white photos can be difficult to understand.

The author does an excellent job of researching and presenting information about the Giza Plateau. The book is filled with photographs and diagrams that help explain his assertions.
This is a welcome addition for anyone interested in the Great Pyramids and Sphinx.
