AMAZING Cryptography Thriller

For anyone who is a fan of Dan Brown like books, you will absolutely LOVE Rusell Blake's book. The lead character Dr. Steven Cross, is an amateur cryptographer who gets pulled into a quest surrounding a 15th century relic. The story is filled with suspense, code breaking, travel around the work with just right amount of violence and romance. This is one of the best code breaking books I have since reading Da Vinci Code. I have purchased the rest of Russell Blake's book and can't wait to read more. ABSOLUTELY Worth Your Time!

Loved this book

First i am not the kind of reader that picks apart grammer etc. I let the story come to me and take it in for what it is. That said i loved the story and the characters. Once i started i could not put it down and finished in two days of reading. This book is every bit as good as Dan Brown and comes close to Steve Berry in my opinion. So if you like this genre you will like this book. On to my third book King of Swords by Blake next.

Just my kind of thing

OK, I admit it, I eat this stuff up--Dan Brown, National Treasure, that kind of thing. I'm not even really sure why, but it's my favorite kind of conspiracy--religion, treasure, mystery, cover-ups, traitors, hot pursuits. I could read that kind of book all day (sometimes I do!). This is a great example of the genre. Genuine mystery, enough research in there so you learn something and are convinced, and enough action and plot twists to keep it thrilling. Nothing extraneous in this story--if it's in the book, it's there for a reason. Classic Blake.

Blue Highways

William Least Heat Moon may be one of the greatest writers of our time. First encountered his work in the New Yorker, which excerpted chapters from Blue Highways. I then (of course) had to read the book, which is an account of his journey in an old van, outfitted for sleeping/living, to see the real United States using only the small roads (which are marked on the map in blue -- hence the title). The events that caused him to put his usual life on hold, and take up this oddyssey, will strike a responsive chord for many readers who have ever wanted to stop the world and step back in time.
His experiences, the people he meets, the conversations they enjoy, make for an extraordinary insight into America.
His writing sings in the way that the old story tellers did...weaving a web that captures and captivates you until you finish the book. And then you don't stop until you've read all of his books! (Wish he'd write some more). I recommend this book highly for personal reading and for gifts.

William Least Heat-Moon's Blue Highways is referred to by many as a "cult classic". If so, it's a shame this book is not better known. It is 1978 and William Least Heat-Moon is 38 years old. Upon the near-simultaneous loss of his college teaching job and his marriage, he needs to get out of town, to leave places of sadness, futility and routine, to clear his mind and renew his soul. William leaves Missouri driving a '75 Econoline that he also intends to live in for the next several months; the truck has been named "Ghost Dancing". He has determined that he will drive only the blue highways, the old map color for single-lane rural highways and county roads, the roads that lead to all the small places in America, lost and forgotten by time, faded in economic or historic significance. He will travel and look around and listen, meet new people and learn new things and new ways of thinking. Most of all he will think, taking an inward journey as well.

Born of English-Irish and Osage ancestry, William Least Heat-Moon also has an Anglo name. He writes, "I have other names: Buck, once a slur...also Bill Trogdon." He explains his Osage identity humbly: "My father calls himself Heat Moon, my elder brother Little Heat-Moon. I, coming last, am therefore Least. It has been a long lesson of a name to learn." With that we begin.

Experts categorize this book as "travel literature". It is a travel book, for William does travel 13,000 miles across the United States and briefly through Ontario. He describes places, converses with people, learns or reviews history. As may be expected, the places are common and strange, mundane and magical. Some are pleasing and peaceful; others evoke indignance in William, unpleasantness and judgment. Most of the people are kind, some of them are wise. Some are alive with vitality and hope, others ghosts or near ghosts. But they are all human still, and in some way each is a gift. And that's what makes Blue Highways worthwhile: it is also a philosophy book, filled with the humanity of the author and the people to whom he gives voice. He is old enough to understand and appreciate the people and places he encounters, young enough to feel wonder and room to grow.

Two special voices live within William Least Heat-Moon's head and heart: Walt Whitman and Black Elk. Whitman, the poet traveler who has seen it all before, rides along to chuckle occasionally or illuminate an experience or thought. Black Elk offers gentle guidance and comfort; he is a steady hand.

It is inevitable that William Least Heat-Moon makes his way home. And it is not surprising that along the way he discovers that he can - that he has - "remade" himself. Blue Highways is a beautiful book.

He encountered a great country filled with kind

In the late seventies, William Least Heat-Moon (it's a native-American name) lost his job as a professor at a Missouri college and took off in his van to discover America. What he did was quite interesting: During his journey he avoided the interstates and traveled only by back roads and two-lane highways. He encountered a great country filled with kind, thoughtful and hard-working people; a country that is worth saving in other words. This isn't a travelogue. This is great literature. In some ways it reminded me of Henry David Thoreau's Walden Pond, the difference being that, while Thoreau's observations were written within the confines of a pond in the New England wilderness, Heat-Moon covered a continent. Another difference is, to be completely frank, Blue Highways is a lot more readable. At times, Walden seemed the literary equivalent of drinking saltwater taffy out of a paper cup.

Blue Highways is one for the ages.

Good read for a lifestyle change

Very easy read on flexible dieting. Makes you understand the material and there is no shaming. Sometimes with lifestyle books you can feel guilty reading them as it points out the many wrongs you do, but this is a book that simply states it's purpose and shows it wants to help you.

Definitely a great read and will help understand how you can better your body as a lifestyle and not a temporary change

A brilliant book I wish I had months ago

Finally, it all makes sense! As a chef and clean eater, I could never understand why it was such a struggle keeping the extra weight off. The author does a fantastic job at explaining flexible dieting and the importance of adjusting macros to find what works for your body. The book is detailed in explanations yet easy to read and follow, with a delightful tone. A must have book for the New Year.

A simple easy to follow way to live. There are no difficult scientific explanations but at the same time Betsy manages to lay out the how's and why's in a way we can ALL understand and apply. It's a "it's not rocket science" kinda book written in a friendly voice that will appeal to anyone interested in figuring out the whole food/weight thing.

About the Author
John Curra (PhD, Purdue University) is a professor at Eastern Kentucky University where he has taught courses in introductory sociology, social deviance, criminology, sociological analysis, social problems, social psychology, juvenile delinquency, and criminological theory since 1975. He has taught. In 1981, he received the prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. In 2005–2007, he was selected as a Foundation Professor, one of the highest honors a professor can receive at Eastern Kentucky University. In 2012, Curra moved to the Department of Criminal Justice in the School of Justice Studies. That same year, he was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award by the Department of Criminal Justice in the College of Justice and Safety. Curra has authored or co-authored several texts, an instructor’s manual, and a reader.

This is a delightful and entertaining story about a bear trying to get rid of his shadow. My kids thoroughly enjoy it and we can all appreciate the humor in the premise - a great book for sparking and sharing joy with your kids.

A Bear's shadow is a nice story

There are about twenty-eight pages with each one being of white background with various square sizes of the illustrations in blue, green, brown and white colors. This makes the picture a separate box and the text below or next to the picture.

The bear is a brown bear that starts the day by fishing at the pond. Bear notices a big fish while hooking the worm onto his pole and wants to catch it. The bear stood up to toss his pole in the water but his shadow scared the fish away. The bear tried to tell his shadow to go away but it stayed there. Since the shadow would not leave the Bear decided he would run until the shadow disappeared. The Bear ran around the pond, through a field of flowers and then jumped over a brook ending up hiding behind a tree.

Next the Bear went home to get a hammer and nails to nail his shadow to the ground but the shadow did not go down. Then the Bear got out a shovel thinking he could bury the shadow in a deep hole. By the time Bear finished filling the hole up it was afternoon with the sun high in the sky but no shadow to be found. After all this hard work Bear went inside to take a nap awakening after the sun had set. Bear went to open his front door and there was his shadow on the floor so he quickly shut the door going outside and hoping to leave his shadow inside.

It turned out his shadow was too quick because it was outside the door with the Bear. Now the Bear decided that if the shadow would let him catch a fish he would let the shadow get one too and when he nodded his head so did his shadow. Back to the pond the Bear goes again but this time the sun is in another part of the sky so the shadow was able to steer clear of scaring the fish. This time the shadow was behind the Bear while in the morning the shadow was in front of him closer to the pond. At the end of the day the Bear and his shadow caught their big fish.

My six-year old likes to play around with shadows on the wall in the house plus loves bears so this is a book that gets read quite often. I would suggest a toddler to first grader would benefit from the silliness of the bear and his shadow.

About the Author
John Muir was born in Scotland in 1838, and made many expeditions to Alaska and the Sierra Nevadas in California throughout his life. After his adventure with Stickeen in 1880, Muir continued to travel the world and educate people about Yosemite and the natural world. Muir died in 1914.

Fred White is an associate professor of composition and directed the writing program at Santa Clara University from 2003 to 2005. His books include The Well-Crafted Argument (with Simone Billings), Lifewriting, Communicating Technology, Science and the Human Spirit, and The Writer's Art.
