Final Quatermass Triology

The final teleplay of the original Quatermass triology, this one was produced for TV at the end of 1958. It's also the best of the three. Many of us experienced it first on late-night TV under the film adaptation, Five Million Years to Earth (1967), although British audiences saw it under the original title. I've seen the original series and the film version, it's hard to decide which is better. The film was able to take advantage of color film, but some of the key scenes are better realized in the serial.

The teleplay begins with the discovery of fossils in a London excevation project. Reading the first section, "The Halfmen" can be a little confusing to those of us on this side of the Atlantic; I don't think I've ever encountered the term "grab" when used for an earth excivator. This episode exists to introduce us to the major characters: Quatermass, his unpleasent college Col Breen and Dr. Matthew Roney. Roney and his assistant Barbara Judd are called in to excavate the site when the prehistoric bones are discovered. At the same time, Quatermass is horrified to find his Experimental Rocket Group is being put until military control with the martinet Colonel James Breen in charge. When a possible unexploded WW2 missile is discovered on the site, Quatermass and Breen are called in to examine it.

Tension begins to build in the second episode, "The Ghosts". Roney becomes increasingly convinced there is a connection between the hull found in the site and the primates whose fossilized skeletons they are removing. And elderly couple known as the Chilcots are forced to leave their house because of the "unexploded bomb" threat, allowing Kneal to add a little local color to the teleplay. It ends with one of the military sappers cringing in horror from the demon he claims to have seen inside the hull.

Unable to get the hull open, Breen calls in a civilian drill expert who brings a borazon drill with him. While Roney and Quatermass research all the legends and storie of demons about the site area, the teleplay inter-cuts with the attempt to open the hull. In this episode, "Imps and Demons", the inhabitants of the hull are revealed: dead things who are connected to it by way of spidery strands. Kneal describes them as:

Insect-like creatures...rather more than two feet high...with tripod legs and stick-like forelimbs hunched like those of the mantis.Each face is a mockery of the human, with a pointed proboscis below its two complex eyes. Above this triangular mask sprout antennae shaped like antlers.

Part four, "The Enchanted" has Quatermass and Roney arguing for the hull as a remenant of a Martian spaceship which crash landed five million years ago. Breen and his fraction refuse to believe them, claiming it was a Nazi terror rocket launched against Britain in the closing days of WW2. Meanwhile, a civilian operator has a terrifying experience while trying to unpack his drill and flees the site to the safety of a church. Kneale spends five pages on directions at the end of this episode, demonstrating his clear vision of the action.

In five, "The Wild Hunt", the action takes a pause when Roney, Quatermass hook Barbara Judd up to a machine conveniently built by Roney to record mental images. By recreating the conditions which caused the drill operator to experience his visions, they are able to record on videotape (a new medium at the time), the same images. Quatermass shows the recordings to Breen and the government minister in charge and argues the hull is a spaceship sent from Mars five million years ago:

Quatermass: Arthropods like those we found.You'll have noticed they were killing-and being killed. I think we may have seen ritual slaughter- to preserve a fixed society- to rid it of mutations. You find something like it on earth among certain termites and wasps. Now my concern is that this stored memory of killing coupled with another power that hull in the pit seems to posses- the power to redirect human energy!

The series concludes with "Hob". Unpersuaded by Quatermass and Roney, Breen and his allies in the government schedule a press conference to push the idea of the hull being a WW2 weapon. To make the situation worse, they plan on making the announcement in the dig site. When a power cable for the camera lights shorts out on the hull, all hell breaks loose and the ancient Martian spaceship comes to life. As Kneale describes it:

Cut to the floor of the excavation Through swirling dust it can be seen that the incandescent hull is almost gone...sublimated to the monstrous shape that hangs above the pit. A shimmering form bursts rhythmically into a blinding glare. It extends upwards for a hundred feet or more, and its outline is defined. It recalls that of the Martian bodies...a terrible horned thing!

Of course, Quatermass and Roney save they day and prevent humanity's destruction at the feelers of alien invaders. I'm sure post-modernists can read all kinds of things into these teleplays. Kneale pounds the message home on the last page where the survivors are speaking at a press conference:

Quatermass [speaking to front]:...That is the full account. Matthew Roney was a brave man and a friend. Much more- it is with his kind that hope lies. For they have outgrown the Martian in us [track to a close up] If another of these things should ever be found. But we also have knowledge of ourselves...of the ancient, destructive urges in us, that grow more deadly as our populations approach in size and complexity those of ancient Mars. Every war crisis, witch-hunt, race riot, and purge...is a reminder and a warning. [he pauses] We are the Martians. If we cannot control the inheritance within us...this will be the second dead planet!

Arias well arranged for piano

These opera arias are for the piano, not for accompanying actual singing, of course you can sing-along. They are correctly described as intermediate advanced. There is another book in the series for easy intermediate playing on the same Arias. Looks the same with the same arias but with a green cover. I recommend them both if you are starting on the piano and love opera.

Worthy Transcriptions

The full title of this book is Opera at the Piano: 74 Favorite Selections from 45 Operas Transcribed for Intermediate to Advanced Piano Solo. The title is quite accurate in that nearly all of the selections included are well known "favorite selections." Included are: "Celesta Aida" and the "Triumphal March" from AIDA, "Una voce poco fa" from IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, four selections each from LA BOHEME, CARMEN, MAGIC FLUTE and LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, three selections each from DON GIOVANNI, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, MANON LESCAUT, RIGOLETTO, TOSCA, LA TRAVIATA, and one or two selections each from: MARTHA, I PAGLIACCI, HANSEL UND GRETEL, LOUISE, LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR, LA RONDINE, SAMSON ET DALILA, Il TROVATORE, etc. As would be implied by any listing of "favorites," the time period covered is basically Mozart through Puccini, with a few earlier chestnuts thrown in (a couple of selections from Handel's SERSE and GIULIO CESARE and "When I am laid in earth" from Purcell's DIDO AND AENEAS). The book includes transcriptions of instrumental works as well as vocal works -- the Intermezzo from Macagni's CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA, the Waltzes from Strauss' DER ROSENKAVALIER, the Mediation from Massanet's THAIS, and overtures to Rossini's GUILLAUME TELL and Glinka's RUSLAN AND LYUDMILA. None of the well known instrumental music of Wagner is included and his presence in this volume is limited to two selections from TANNHAUSER. Included at the beginning of the book are short paragraph-length synopses of all of the operas represented which would no doubt be helpful to those unfamiliar with all of the operas represented. The transcriptions are pianistic and work well at the keyboard. None of the transcribers are identified. The pieces are of medium to advanced difficulty. These are not transcriptions in the sense of the virtuosic Lisztian operatic transcriptions where Liszt wrote new compositions based on operatic melodies. Instead, these are straightforward faithful piano transcriptions of works originally written for voice and orchestra. It is unlikely that any of these pieces would be included on recital programs. I see the main function of these pieces as giving opera loving pianists hours of pleasure playing through them for him/herself and maybe for friends.

Excellent transcriptions

Unless you are a virtuoso pianist and can handle the Liszt transcriptions of opera, this is a fantastic way to play some of the greatest opera music on solo piano.
I particularly like the "Revenge Song" from "The Magic Flute." These are for intermediate to intermediate-advanced (you can play some Beethoven Sonatas, for example) and deliver a lot of pleasing sound for the effort.

Useful for Studying

I found the study questions to be useful in my study for the PfMP exam because it highlighted areas where I needed more study. Now that I have taken the exam, I can say that the questions in the practice exam do not fully align with the PfMP exam, but I would still recommend it since there is nothing else on the market yet.

Why oh why haven’t I read this delicious book before? It's exactly my kind of memoir (because I live in the same watershed in northern New Mexico) and because I love a well-written personal history that is firmly entrenched in its place.

This is a very sweet read. Greenwood definitely knows her place, integrating the important things, such as culture and ecology and economy (the struggle to make a living here is comic. Well, if it weren't so tragic). And she knows herself--or gets to know herself much more deeply through this journey as she struggles to keep her land along the Rio Hondo. And to reinvent herself.

She does so, quite literally, by standing her own ground. Her ancient adobe along the the river is her Walden Pond, but this story is enlivened with quirky local characters, from the red-headed fireball ex-wife of a good friend, to the neighbor who take her hunting, blackening her face with mud (she learns to skin an elk). The journey contains its own domestic twists and turns, from neighbor kids selling her fish they've hand-caught from the river, to the community mudding the local church, to the parcientes cleaning the acequia, to her own ex-husband and children, who all must redefine their relationship to one another.

But her relationships to the many creatures in her world are similarly unique: She tries the "Findhorn approach" to Black Widow spiders, plays the radio to disrupt unwanted beavers, befriends horses and bears, and uses her medical (and spiritual) skills to save an ewe and her lambs.

Her life-affirming candor, revealed through a relationship that never quite transpired, offers insight into her own personality:

"I'm not a romantic. When I fantasize about Reynaldo, it's not about sex. I imagine us reading Antonio Machado's poetry to each other, dancing together by candlelight in the living room, walking in the hills. Concocting late-night strategies, storming the Forest Service office, lying side by side across the cattle guard on opening day at the Ski Valley."

While she does not romanticize about life in northern New Mexico nor its struggles, there's still room to fantasize. This might be best done on the rope swing she built, which takes you breathlessly out over the moving river, especially on a hot summer's day. It's an apt metaphor for this lovely book.

This is a book about historiography

Yes. It is. Klein does a pretty good job lamenting the separation of history in practice and history in theory. He points out that many historians like to think of themselves as existing outside of history and historical influence. The thesis reminds me of Carr's book on historiography.

About the Author

John J. Macionis� was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania.

John Macionis'�publications are wide-ranging, focusing on community life in the United States, interpersonal intimacy in families, effective teaching, humor, new information technology, and the importance of global education.

In addition, John Macionis and Nijole V. Benokraitis have edited the best-selling anthology Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology. Macionis and Vincent Parrillo have written the leading urban studies text, Cities and Urban Life (Pearson). Macionis’ most recent textbook is Social Problems (Pearson).

John Macionis is Professor and Distinguished Scholar of Sociology at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he has taught for almost thirty years. During that time, he has chaired the Sociology Department, directed the college’s multidisciplinary program in humane studies, presided over the campus senate and the college’s faculty, and taught sociology to thousands of students.

In 2002, the American Sociological Association presented Macionis with the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching, citing his innovative use of global material as well as the introduction of new teaching technology in his textbooks.

Professor Macionis has been active in academic programs in other countries, having traveled to some fifty nations. He writes, “I am an ambitious traveler, eager to learn and, through the texts, to share much of what I discover with students, many of whom know little about the rest of the world. For me, traveling and writing are all dimensions of teaching. First, and foremost, I am a teacher—a passion for teaching animates everything I do.”

At Kenyon, Macionis teaches a number of courses, but his favorite class is Introduction to Sociology, which he offers every semester. He enjoys extensive contact with students and invites everyone enrolled in each of his classes to enjoy a home-cooked meal.

The Macionis family—John, Amy, and children McLean and Whitney—live on a farm in rural Ohio. In his free time, Macionis enjoys tennis, swimming, hiking, and playing oldies rock-and-roll (he recently released his first CD). Macionis is as an environmental activist in the Lake George region of New York’s Adirondack Mountains, working with a number of organizations, including the Lake George Land Conservancy, where he serves as president of the board of trustees.

Nijole V. Benokraitis, professor of sociology at the University of Baltimore, has taught the marriage and family course for almost 25 years. It’s her favorite class, but her courses in racial and ethnic relations and gender roles run a close second. Professor Benokraitis received a B.A. in Sociology and English from Emmanuel College, an M.A. in sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana, and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin.

She is a strong proponent of applied sociology and requires her students to enhance their study through interviews, direct observation, and other hands-on learning methods. She also enlists her students in community service activities such as tutoring and mentoring inner-city high school students, writing to government officials and other decision makers about specific social problems, and volunteering research services to nonprofit organizations.

�

Professor Benokraitis, who immigrated to the United States from Lithuania with her family when she was 6 years old, is bilingual and bi-cultural and is very empathetic of students who try to balance several cultural worlds. She has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited eight books, including Contemporary Ethnic Families in the United States: Characteristics, Variations, and Dynamics; Feuds about Families: Conservative, Centrist, Liberal, and Feminist Perspectives; Modern Sexism: Blatant, Subtle, and Covert Discrimination; and Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology.

Dr. Benokraitis has published numerous articles and book chapters on such topics as institutional racism, discrimination against women in government and higher education, fathers in two-earner families, displaced homemakers, and family policy. She has served as both chair and graduate program director of the University of Baltimore’s Department of Sociology and has chaired numerous university committees.

She has received grants and fellowships from many institutions, including the National Institute of Mental Health, the Ford Foundation, the American Educational Research Association, the Administration on Aging, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. She has for some time served as a consultant in the areas of sex and race discrimination to women’s commissions, business groups, colleges and universities, and federal government programs. She has also made several appearances on radio and television on gender communication differences and single-sex educational institutions. She currently serves on the editorial board of Women & Criminal Justice and reviews manuscripts for several academic journals.

Professor Benokraitis lives in Maryland with her husband, Dr. Vitalius Benokraitis, associate chair and director of graduate studies in computer science, Loyola College in Maryland. They have two adult children, Gema and Andrius.

Great Collection of Essays

The most important thing to know about "Seeing Ourselves" by John J. Macionis and Nijole V. Benokraitis is that it is NOT a sociology textbook. Instead, it is a collection of essays that talk about a variety of topics. This doesn't help you "learn sociology" directly. Instead, it lets you read about a variety of situations, absorb them, and expand your knowledge about how things work in different parts of life.

Some are classics that everyone should have read at least once by now. you get Karl Marx and his "Manifesto of the Communist party". Then you get "McJobs: McDonaldization and the Workplace," "The Amish: A Small Society," "India's Sacred Cow," and "Are Asian Americans Becoming 'White'?" The essays cover a wide range of topics and help you think more about how different groups integrate into our global world.

These aren't questions with easy answers. From "The English-Only Debate" to "Female Genital Mutilation" there are people who will argue strongly on both sides. The idea here is to look into these issues and examine how they help us learn more about ourselves and the world we live in.

I found the essays to range a broad area of topics, and the book layout makes them easy to read. There are questions and notes at the end of each one. The questions are often very simplistic, but I imagine the book was meant to be an introduction for some students to very complex topics they'd never thought about before, so that is perhaps to be expected.

A great solo peice with technical solos

This book is great! It contains great peices of music for the snare drummer. It is made to be rudimentaly sound. Meaning the solo's are full of many rudiments. This makes it full of great playback, and full of great learning. The solo's range from diffucult to very diffucult. It is not for the the faint at heart drummer. Hodge Podge(the easiest solo) cannot be played unless you have the ability to play rolls(5/7/9/10/11/13),flams,ruffs,and sixteenth notes with accompyning eight notes. The hardest title is My Friend Norman and Gingersnap. The 6/8 excercies are very diffucult in their own right. This is great solo book for any above average to advanced snare drummer!

A Timeless Classic for Rudimental Snare Drummers

John Pratt's book is a staple that all serious percussionists should play at some point. Pratt utilizes many rudiments in every solo and incorporates a lot of "over the barline" techniques. Many of my own drum students have performed these solos for solo and ensemble festivals and recitals. This book is a great tool for drummers in the medium to advanced stages. I highly recommend!

These snare drum solos are AWESOME! Challenging, MUSICAL (yes all caps), and FUN to play. Each solo contains many rudiments which are listed at the bottom of each piece. The phrasing used is great, alot of "over the bar" phrases, and sweet sticking patterns. GREAT book, if you do not own it and want to work on your chops this book will help tremendously. One of the best things about this book is that the solos sound awesome, are musical, and are FUN to play.

These are not boring rudimental exercises like so many other snare drum solos, these are (again) VERY well written, musical, fun sounding and fun to play.

One of the BEST books ever written for snare drum solos. A GREAT price, for what it is actually worth it is practically free.
